Packard Bell recalls laptop batteries

Packard Bell has issued a voluntary recall of some of its laptop batteries. The models affected are the MX36, MX37, MX51 and MX52 notebooks, and only units manufactured between July and December 2007.

The problematic batteries "may experience internal short circuits", says the company. That could result in the cells overheating and/or catching fire - which wouldn't be good, really. You'll be glad to hear that there's no risk of electrocution to the user, though.

The affected units have mostly been sold in Europe, and none were sold in the USA. Users who are concerned that they might have one of the iffy machines can phone Packard Bell's UK service hotline on 0871 467 0008, or visit the company's website.

The company says that until you hear, it's probably best to take the battery out and just use the power cord to operate your machine. That's no fun, is it?
