2010 FIFA World Cup to be filmed in 3D

Sony to capture 25 matches in full 3D

3 December 2009 17:31 GMT / By Amy-Mae Elliott

As well as being high def for some in the UK, the next World Cup will also be a 3D one, thanks to an agreement between Sony and FIFA for some of the 2010 FIFA World Cup to be filmed in 3D.

Up to 25 of the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa matches will be filmed using Sony's 3D professional cameras.

"Global sporting events such as the FIFA World Cup are very important drivers of new technology, particularly in the TV market", says Tom Morrod, senior analyst of TV Tech at Screen Digest.

"The news that the FIFA World Cup will be filmed in 3D for the first time will certainly increase the uptake rate of 3D TVs in the home and develop the installed base earlier than would otherwise have been the case".

From 2010 Sony promises a "range of 3D compatible products" such as Blu-ray players, VAIO notebook computers and the PlayStation 3.

Sky has announced it is to start 3D broadcasts in 2010, but there's no news yet as to whether the world's biggest football event will be available in 3D on Sky.
