Acer plans Chrome OS netbook

2 December 2009 11:16 GMT / By Duncan Geere

Acer has plans to launch a netbook featuring Google's browser-based Chrome OS in the second half of 2010, according to industry sources quoted by Digitimes.

Acer's chairman, JT Wang, told the site that he reckons that Acer will be the first to market with a machine running the search company's operating system. Chrome OS boasts boot times of as little as 7 seconds and lightning-fast performance in general use, thanks to Google's catalogue of web apps.

Acer has history as the first large manufacturer to get a netbook running Google's mobile OS, Android, on the market. At the moment there aren't any specs for the new machine, or a release date more specific than late 2010, but as soon as we hear more about Acer's plans, we'll be sure to let you know.
