Google celebrates St Andrew's Day

Scots will be celebrating St Andrew's Day - the feast of the patron saint of Scotland, and Google is celebrating the occasion with one of its famous homepage "doodles", depicting Edinburgh Castle and a Scottish flag, the Saltire, flying high above it.

The day is a bank holiday in Scotland but this year marks a particularly interesting occasion, because plans are being laid out for a potential vote on Scottish independence. The Scottish Nationalists are publishing a white paper on an independence referendum.

As well as Scotland, St Andrew is also the patron saint of Ukraine, Russia, Romania, Greece, Amalfi, Luqa in Malta, and Esgueira in Portugal. Eastern and Western churches are holding the feast of Andrew.
