TiVo, the US equivalent of Sky Plus is coming to the UK following a deal with Virgin Media announced on Tuesday.

The news, broken during the American company's earnings results will see a "long-term, strategic partnership with Virgin Media", says Tom Rogers, president and CEO of TiVo.

According to the two companies the deal will involve TiVo developing a converged television and broadband interactive interface to power Virgin Media's next generation, high definition set top boxes.

"TiVo will offer Virgin Media's nearly four million UK customers TiVo's advanced television software and user interface on both its traditional and DVR set-top boxes", confirmed Rogers.

Virgin Media currently anticipates its first TiVo co-branded product in 2010.

  • Surely the title of the article should be 'TiVo heading to the UK... again'.

I recall seeing TiVo boxes in the UK around 2000-2001, but the public gave it a resounding 'meh'.

  • "broadband to the television capabilities", I just can't wait for that, let me get on the Amstrad e-m@iler and tell everyone. Posted by Remy Martin, UK
  • Personally I had been hoping they'd work with Freeview along the lines of their Aus/NZ TiVo boxes. But anything that brings TiVo back to the UK is brilliant in my opinion. Posted by Chris Butcher, UK
  • @Remy Martin

    Amended.

  • I had a Tivo unit in the UK 12 years ago. They were really good at the time. It's a shame SKY (who were operating it) pulled the plug and left us all high and dry. Posted by Den, England
  • Loved my old Tivo, added 2nd hdd, modified the software, it was ace. Even all those years ago the software was miles ahead of Virgins effort. Posted by Andy, England
  • Den your recollection is wrong. The TiVo in the UK was released in October 2000, indeed the first public showing of a TiVo in the US was in 1999, and while the sale of new hardware ended in 2003, the subscription Electronic Programme Guide that makes the TiVo worth having is still being operated today in 2009. Second hand TiVo's can be pucrhased on eBay and the like.

My unit is still gong strong on a single payment lifetime subscription that just gets better in value month after month.

  • Pig Ugly, mind you no worse then the V+ box. Hope the decoder is better - it falls over when decoding fast running water, plus it's MPEG2 only. It's a pity Virgin didn't go with a box based on the new Intel CE4100 platform - then most software would run, plus we'd have Silverlight streaming, a 1.2GHz app cpu, and 3-D graphics too Posted by Gary, England
