O2 promises network improvements

Major upgrade underway for surge in data usage

O2 promises network improvements

19 November 2009 11:39 GMT / By Amy-Mae Elliott

In news that its customers will be happy to hear, O2 has revealed plans for a big upgrade to its UK network, with £500 million investment over the last 2 years.

The operator - which currently offers data-happy phones such as the Apple iPhone and the Palm Pre - is looking to improve its data handling capabilities.

As part of the plans, London will see around 40 new mobile data hotspots in the city by the end of the year, with another 160 following on in the next year.

Meanwhile the rest of the country will see another 1500 new locations to boost service across the UK.

Derek McManus, chief technology officer at O2 UK, said that the company predicts a surge in data usage over the next year and is working to improve its network capacity for the future.

  • predicts a data surge ? If they (and the other mobo ops) had got their act together years ago, they would have a. installed better data capabilities when it was cheaper and b. be reaping the large financial rewards today.
Installing kit now is expensive and when they try to pass the cost on in a recession no-one will want to pay. If it had already been an established communications medium, no one could do without mobo data. But today it's still a novelty.

  • Years ago, GPRS was still king and people with iPhones and the like aren't the sort that are short of a bob or two at the moment. Better late than never, I say. Posted by Beer-Keg, United Kingdom

  • I wish T-Mobile would do the same. It's really annoying to use a 3G network that takes a lunch break at the same time as you.

I disagree with adrianaitken that mobile data is still a novelty. It may not be ubiquitous in the same was a mobile telephony and messaging but it is certainly mainstream now.

  • According to expert network analysts the current 3G bandwidth for all 5 UK operators is coming close to saturation. I hope it doesn't mean they'll be throttling our data usage just when data intensive mobile apps is about to take off! Posted by Art Vandelay, Alderham
