Britain's average Twitterer revealed

A study into Britain's Twitter users has yielded some interesting results enabling a general profile of the average user to be revealed.

Here in the UK there are around 5.5 million people that use the micro-blogging service and it seems a typical user is under 35, less likely to vote Conservative and are more liberal in outlook that the majority of the population.

UK Twitterers are also more likely to come from a lower social class, more likely to live in London, and "defensive of civil liberties", reports The Telegraph.

The study, conducted by YouGov and published in Prospect magazine, surveyed 2024 adults and then compared the Twitter users' traits against the non-users in the group.

The Twitter users polled find the service either "very worthwhile" or "mildly useful" - but 39% said that it "dumbs down" the way people communicate.
