PS3 update bringing Facebook integration

As well as the option to change your gamercard colour

PS3 update bringing Facebook integration

12 November 2009 10:25 GMT / By Duncan Geere

Some images have emerged of a forthcoming firmware update for the PS3 that introduces Facebook functionality to the games console. The integration with the world's biggest social networking site is already available on the rival Xbox 360, but not on the Nintendo Wii.

Also in the images is the option to change the colour of your gamercard, as well as a new interface for looking through photos that are stored on the console. Not quite as exciting as the Facebook integration, but may be of some interest to those who just aren't satisfied with the default gamercard colours.

It's not clear exactly when the next firmware update will be issued - right now these are just screenshots found on Sony's PlayStation website. What's clear, though, is that Sony needs integration with web services - and soon - to compete with the Xbox, which is rolling out similar features at an ever-increasing rate.

  • let's just hope that the Facebook integration can be disabled, rather than it be forced upon us.

Not everyone cares about Facebook, has actual real friends and wishes not to be aware of peoples moods...

  • The XMB on the PS3 is starting to buckle under the weight of it's own tacked on novelties. What had started as simple and slick is now cumbersome and garish.

I mean just look at that first screenshot. You've the default unobtrusive glass iconography that fades and appears slapped in the aesthetic face by a blue Facebook motif. Such lacklustre modifications are making Sony's interface look really cheap and hackneyed.

How about we incorporate some God damned search functionality for content, eh? Here's a device with a user replaceable HDD that can store all of your media, that can display all of your metadata and album artwork... yet you cannot search content. You cannot use the PS3 as a serious media jukebox with mere list navigation. It's infuriating.

Give me smart playlists that display new content, popular content, have the thing stitch album artwork together into some clever digital quilt of related content... by genre, by year, by artist.

Christ on a bike Sony. Join the dots! The PS3 has all of this untapped potential, and you're pre-occupying yourself with novelty slideshows, social networks and shimmering screensavers.

You say 'Start something'. I say to Sony, 'Make good on what you already have!'.

  • 'Gamercard colours'... seriously? That's the best they've got?

    X360: I'm kicking you're arse.
    PS3: Oooh, do it harder.
