Caffeine rolls out to Google Search

To be activated in Google datacentres soon

Google has announced that its secret "Caffeine" project will be soon rolling out to the search engine's datacentres. We originally heard about the project back in August, when Google said that you might not notice it because it won't affect the front-end of the site.

Instead it's an "under the hood" update which Google reckons should "push the envelope on size, indexing speed, accuracy, comprehensiveness and other dimensions". It's been in testing for some time, but a message on the test site now says: "Based on the success we've seen, we believe Caffeine is ready for a larger audience. Soon we will activate Caffeine more widely, beginning with one data center".

Matt Cutts, one of Google's SEO team, has promised webmasters that the updates won't be rolled out widely until the new year - only one datacentre will be getting the improvements for now. Given how many businesses rely on high placement in Google for their business, any change in how the search giant calculates results could be catastrophic, so the big G is taking this one slowly.

When the update rolls out more widely, we'll let you know.
