3's HTC Hero with Spotify now available

3 also gets its first Android handset

3's HTC Hero with Spotify now available

6 November 2009 10:27 GMT / By Duncan Geere

Spotify has announced on its blog that the previously-promised Spotify Phone is now available from 3 UK, in both its retail stores and online.

The deal comprises of an HTC Hero preloaded with the Spotify Android app, a 24-month subscription to Spotify Premium, 750 minutes and unlimited texts and data for £35 per month over 24 months. The phone itself will require a £100 initial outlay.

If you like the idea of the deal, but aren't keen on the phone, then there's a good chance that if this does well, more handsets will become available with similar offers, potentially from other operators. If and when that happens, we'll bring you the announcement.

It'll also be interesting to see what effect this has on services like Nokia's limited Comes with Music. In the meantime, is this a deal you like the look of? Or is the monthly fee and upfront payment a smidge too much over a 2-year contract? Tell us what you think in the comments below.

  • I think the up front payment of nearly £100 will put people off as they are used to getting their phones for free nowadays especially when it is a 2 year contract.

They would probably be better off charging £40 month and having no up front payment.

  • Totally agree. 18 month contracts are bad enough but when you don't even get the thing free after paying a grand total of £840, then that sounds like a pretty rotten deal. Posted by Dan Sung, United Kingdom
  • Existing three customers who are interested should call 333 and negotiate for a better deal. I managed to pay a one-off for the HTC Hero handset (£157, cheap) and keep it on my existing price plan (also a cheap one) by extending my existing contract for 18 months. All in all, I'll pay £391 for phone and 18 months of calls, texts and data (though capped at 1Gb/month)

Don't be put off by the high list price, they're keen to do a deal over the phone.

  • My Three contract is up next month. I'm hoping to get a good deal on my existing price plan. The Hero looks fab Posted by Debbie, UK
  • Don't care about Spotify, but Three upgrade is due and this is the only phone Three offer that is modern (next is the Samsung Jet, but it's just a fancy non-smart-phone).

They had better give me a good deal, because the iPhone 3GS at O2 or Orange is the same price, and Orange has that cinema ticket offer to boot.

It appears that Three have a non-spotify Hero option.

Does it come with the latest version of Android? 1.6 or 2.0. Will Three update to 2.1 when it comes out soon?

  • I had a call yesterday as my contract is up for renewal in April.

They have given me an 18 month contract with 900 mix & match mins (my existing contract), plus the unlimited internet access for £30 per month with no fee whatsoever for the handset. They did say that I had to take the offer there and then as they were randomly calling people whose contracts that were up for renewal and only had a limited number of handsets. I reckon that if your contract is up for renewal though that you can arrange a similar deal with them.

I was going to wait to see what offers were available and on which networks for the release of the new HTC Bravo (HTC's version of the new Google handset) which is set to be released in the UK in March, but with no details as to how much you may have to pay for that handset plus possible tarrifs as yet I made a decision to stay with 3 and their offer of the HTC Hero.

The HTC Bravo is likely to be expensive as along with the Google handset it will be the latest technology on the market and the two phones that will possibly give the iphone a run for their money. Hope that I have made the right decision on the cheaper deal I have secured with the HERO.
