Who'll be selling the Motorola Droid in the UK?

O2, T-Mobile and 3 say "not us, guv"

5 November 2009 18:17 GMT / By Duncan Geere

We've been doing a little bit of digging to find out who, in the UK, will be offering Motorola's forthcoming Droid handset. The Android 2.0-sporting QWERTY slider scored a whopping 9/10 in its Pocket-lint review, but given that it's supposed to be due on Friday in the States, we're not seeing any sign of the handset in Britain.

We gave all the UK operators a call to find out exactly whether any of them were planning on stocking the device. O2 told us that it wasn't going to be selling the handset, despite its German wing selling it as the "Milestone". 3 said the same thing - there are no current plans to offer the handset at this time.

T3 spoke to Nicola Shenton, head of handset and device marketing at T-Mobile UK, who told the magazine that the company had tested the phone, but passed it up. We also talked to Orange and Vodafone. Orange told us that it had nothing to announce other than the fact it's selling the Motorola DEXT, and Vodafone promised to call us back and haven't.

From that, we can rule out three of the major five operators. Orange is looking likely, especially given the non-denial when other networks were happy to confirm "no".  We'll update you as and when we hear more from Orange or Vodafone.

  • Muppets. I really want one of these phones, and my current contract has just expired. I guess whoever stocks it gets my next contract, so three have just lost a customer. Posted by Jamie, UK
  • Same as above. Carrier gets the Milestone, carrier gets me. Those of us on G1 contracts are coming towards renewal, and this is like a G1 on crack. They can take my physical keyboard from my cold, dead hands. Posted by Matt, UK
  • Going to agree here. Passing on this phone shows an incredible lack of understanding of the UK market; although I will admit they could all be forgiven for not realising the push that this phone was going to get stateside.

Personally I'm back on pay-as-you-go until a decent handset hits the UK...and the droid would be just that for me.

  • Agree again, Three are probably going to lose another customer. Had the e71, and really want a physical keyboard option. Posted by OJ, UK
  • Bring on the Droid/Milestone here. I expect that T-Mobile will be the likely carrier as the Droid is a "Google experience" phone like the G1 and T-Mobile has shown its willingness to accept this. The others seem to act like they need only UI's on top so they can generate some devious sources of revenues. In reality, the network operators in the UK are protected monopolies that are really just dumb pipes. Like the world needs Vodafone 360 like a third armpit. If they do not offer the Droid, this will make their monopoly power even more glaring.

Bring on the Droid! And get some of that great advertising that Verizon used over here!!

  • Couldn't agree more. I've been holding out for a handset that actually does the Android OS justice for a while. Now it's here the telcoms are dragging their feet… I can’t believe it!

I’ll switch to the first company that has the vision to go with it.

  • If Orange release this in time for my contract renew in Feb I think it might just beat the iPhone to my pocket.

Orange have previous history with Motorola and now with the Dext, surely they can't miss the Droid/Milestone?

  • +1 I'm currently on Orange with my contract ending soon. If they stock this, i'll get it and give them my money for another 18 months. If not, it will be the N900 and another network for me. Posted by Jon, UK
  • Time Magazine's Gadget Of The Year, and as usual the UK companies flail behind the times. T-Mobile Uk, "passed it up".
Come on, Uk Networks! Be proactive for once.

  • This is crazy- all the networks are going crazy for the iPhone just when it is becoming obselete. The Milestone, as the droid is known in the UK, sold out in hours of going on sale on expansys. Vodafone has just said they're not going to be selling the HTC HD2 (another in the same league as the Milestone) to normal customers.

Pah! I'm happy, I have a new HTC HD2, with the only network that was reasonable about it- T-Mobile. and yet they aren't going to be selling the Milestone. Well, I wont be buying shares in them anytime soon. Easiest way in this industry to get destroyed is not offering what the customer wants.

  • Any sign of one yet? Waiting to get a new contract, first to offer me the phone I want gets my money. Seems nobody wants it though, so for now 3 get to keep me as a customer. I'm definately not entering into another contract if its not the phone I want. Posted by Jamie, UK
  • You can buy it from eXpansys, oddly enough you can get it from them with a T-mobile contract so they may have been fibbing when they said they weren't doing it! Posted by Annie, UK
  • I emailed Motorola who replied today, saying they have no control over who sells it. They said it is up to the networks, and at present no UK network is interested in distributing it.

I want it on contract but not with a poxy 1Gb data limit like the t-mobile contract through expansys. Guess I'll need to get a nexus one instead :(

  • My G1 contract will be due for renewal in a couple of months. I want another Android and it MUST have a physical keyboard. I hope someone is listening. Posted by spunkmeyer, UK
  • This is idiotic, why will no network sell this phone? I hate the virtual keyboard on the iPhone, but the Palm pre is just too small.
    Come on Orange, sell it!
