BBC confirms beta rollout at end of month

iPlayer coming to Freesat HD in late Nov

3 November 2009 14:54 GMT / By Duncan Geere

Freesat has announced that it'll be playing host to the BBC iPlayer on its HD service "towards the end of the month". The provider says it'll be the first subscription-free television platform that has a full version of iPlayer, without requiring any extra equipment.

Rahul Chakkara, the BBC's controller of future media TV platforms, has posted on the BBC's Internet blog, saying "I expect to start a Beta deployment by the end of November using capable Freesat devices". Capable, in this case, means HD - it won't be initially available on SD Freesat, though we're told it'll roll out over time to those who aren't lucky enough to have a high-def box.

Freesat's also about to launch an ad campaign, focusing on the HD and Freesat+ options (which come in high definition and with a hard-disk-based video recorder respectively). It'll be launching across TV, digital media and retail.

Perhaps TV watching in households across the UK this Christmas will begin to focus on on-demand content, rather than the traditional broadcast output. What are your technology plans for Christmas? Let us know in the comments.

  • I've got a freesat HD box. Great news on the BBC iPlayer, should have happened sooner. I'm not bothered about built in recorder as most shows are shown many times, and iPlayer will cover me for BBC shows that I miss. Really want to see more HD channels though. With Freeview HD in the distance Freesat need to really concentrate on their HD services, otherwise they won't be able to compete in the market Posted by james, manchester, uk
  • Simple question .... how will the iplayer stream get to the Freesat HD box? I can't imagine that it comes via the satellite, so presumably the Freesat HD box is connected to the internet in some way. So do Freesat HD boxes come with a built-in wireless internet connection? Or a socket for a wired connection? Posted by John, England
  • I think most Freesat boxes have an ethernet connection. So the next thing is to browse the web on the Freesat box Posted by Andy, England
  • I have internet content on my Samsung LED TV via yahoo widgets which gives a flavour, and use BBC iPlayer on my PC for on demand viewing.

Personally I can't wait for iPlayer to launch. I have an HD Freesat box, and it will make that a really worthwhile investment. Hopefully other broadcasters will see how it works and provide a similar service without the pauses which I never get on BBC's iPlayer.

Will it be available by christmas except for Beta testers. I'll put it on my list for Santa.......
