iTunes to take on Cable with subscription offering?

$30 monthly subscription service rumoured

Apple could be about to offer users of its Apple TV product the chance to watch all their favourite TV shows for $30 a month according to rumours.

Although Apple has so far refrained from a monthly subscription package similar to Napster or Spotify for music, that hasn't stopped chatter about a supposed series of talks Apple has been having with TV companies about a new service for TV shows and movies.

Apple, a small player at the moment in an already crowded market, will hope that its iTunes install base will allow it to leap frog companies like Netflix and Microsoft's Xbox into pole position while at the same time offering an alternative to traditional satellite and cable offerings like Cablevision, Comcast or Sky.

According to the rumours Apple is hoping to launch a service in the first half of 2010, although sources suggest that it has yet to sign any TV companies.
