As many of the more "traditional" camera manufacturers report losses in profits and job cuts, it seems that a relative newcomer to the digital photography market has come up trumps.

Known most for its reasonably-priced point and shoot cameras, official figures have shown Samsung was the best-selling brand of compact camera in the UK last year.

The data, which has been confirmed by market analysts at GfK Marketing Services, shows that Samsung held a 16.2% share of market volume in 2008.

Samsung also came out top in both volume and value sales in the month of December, stacking up 18.5% and 15.2% respectively.
