iPhoto's Faces feature can recognise cats

Test proves Apple wrong

iPhoto's Faces feature can recognise cats

28 January 2009 23:23 GMT / By Verity Burns

Apple disappointed pet owners everywhere when it said that iPhoto's new feature, Faces, would only work on human faces and not our favourite four-legged friends.

However, those at Macworld have tested out the feature and proved the bods at Apple wrong - Faces can indeed tell the difference between cats.

After tagging a few images manually with the cat's name ("Lola"), iPhoto began to recognise automatically when Lola was in a picture, and then picked the correct cat to tag when there were two kitties in the photo to choose from.

Macworld reckons that the accuracy was about the same as with humans, with a small percentage that came back as the wrong person or some other random round object.

Apparently a test with dogs is going to go ahead at a later date. Stay tuned dog fans.
