With the launch of the PlayStation 3 set for November, Sony has announced that it is stopping production of the PlayStation One, the console that started it all off.

Launched more than 11 years ago, the computer games division has decided that the console has reached the end of its life cycle and has ceased production of the unit.

Last year, Sony announced that the original PlayStation and its PSOne redesign had surpassed the 100 million units sold milestone.

The console won't die completely however. The company plans to make the original console games available via emulation software for the PSP and says that there will still be plenty of stock in stores around the world.

Sony launched the first PlayStation console in December 1994 in Japan with US and European launches 6 months later.
