Apple has officially confirmed the launch of the Apple TV 3.0 software update on Thursday and with it brings a host of new features to the set top box.

The device, which Apple seems to treat as a forgotten child, gets a complete overhaul with a new user interface as well as adding the company's new announced iTunes features; iTunes LP, Genius Mixes and Internet radio.

“The new software for Apple TV features a simpler and faster interface that gives you instant access to your favourite content”, said Eddy Cue, Apple’s vice president of Internet Services.

Apple has also brought its iPhoto Events and iPhoto Faces offering announced earlier in the year to the under-the-TV unit.

The update comes at the same time as an update for iTunes. The new 9.0.2 version promises:

"To add support for Apple TV software version 3.0, add an option for a dark background for Grid View, and improve support for accessibility", according to Apple.

The software update is free for all Apple TV owners. The company has not at this time announced any changes to the hardware.

UPDATE: It appears iTunes 9.0.2 stops Palm Pre syncing while Apple TV 3.0 wipes Boxee from the box.
