HTC: No Android HTC HD2

Staying Window Mobile 6.5

HTC: No Android HTC HD2

29 October 2009 18:51 GMT / By Stuart Miles

HTC CEO Peter Chou has confirmed that the company has no plans to launch an Android version of its HTC HD2 handset.

"Technically, we could make the HD2 an Android phone, but I have to take care of Windows Mobile", Chou told Forbes magazine.

The handset, which has just been priced in the UK and sports a 4.3-inch touchscreen display, a 1GHz processor, HSDPA, Wi-Fi, GPS and a 5.0 Megapixel camera, is expected any day in the UK with Windows 6.5 as the operating system.

"We're working hard on these kinds of products to get excitement about Windows Mobile back", says Chou.

The news is likely to come as a disappointment to the Android fan base hoping to get a big screen touchscreen device from HTC.

  • Well, here's to hoping for some good news from Acer on Liquid going android. :crossesfingers: Posted by Rico, USA
  • Chou is an idiot. People don't want Windows Mobile, they want Android or anything else other than Windows Mobile. Posted by M Hunter, UK
  • Yup windows mobile has dones iteself no favours with 6.5. I'm using it now and it's only a very small stones throw from 6.1 and 5.
It still has all the horrible features you'd expect.
MS have lost the plot with this release, they would have been better off just waiting until WM7 than pushing the same old crap out the door.
I've used the new HTC hero and it's streets ahead of WM6.5 in terms of speed and usability, even with handsets that use HTC Sense UI.

Little or no support for Opengl ES means screen on WM 6.5 clunk around, just the same as they did on 6.1.
Ms are playing catch-up yet again and loosing ground to Android & Iphone.

WM7 will have to be something very, VERY special to see off Android.

    Good Luck MS.

  • What Peter Chou said:
"Technically, we could make the HD2 an Android phone, but I have to take care of Windows Mobile...".

What Peter Chou *meant* to say:
"Microsoft are paying us a lot of money to have exclusivity on our best phones to ensure Android don't get them..."

The same appears to be happening with Samsung phones and is incredibly annoying to Android fans such as myself who are screaming out for a high-end phone running Android.

  • Shame, as that handset would look sweet with Android on it.
I think basically the gist is that M$ are not happy at all the Android stuff HTC have been shoving out of the door lately.

  • An idot indeed, I can only speculate that Micro$oft bankrolled the development of the HTC HD2... Posted by azz, UK
  • Please remember that HTC was a very small company and it was discovered by some Microsoft executives in a very small booth at the Comdex event in Las Vegas years ago. After they agreed to develop the handsets with Windows Mobile it became a multi-billion dollar company so I can say they still owe them a lot from what they are today Posted by Paul, Netherlands
  • i ran android on my htc kaiser even, so why are u guys so much worried about it?? and for those who are so much against "Microsoft", i think they are the reason u got the pcs today u have.... everything about money.. and google is doing wat its doing for money too.. they want collect more data about users... • So I'll have to start looking for another phone!...I've had HTC phones for years as they always lead the way. Android is the new way. If I can't buy their phones, I'll look at buying one from someone else.

About time Google started to put leverage on these firms like Microsoft appear to be doing.
