Sky Player on Xbox 360 goes for second time lucky

Delay forces service launch to be held back until Wednesday

Sky Player on Xbox 360 goes for second time lucky

28 October 2009 4:17 GMT / By Stuart Miles

Sky and Microsoft will attempt to launch the new Sky Player for Xbox 360 for a second time after the companies had to pull the service on the official launch day on Tuesday.

"The service has been suspended due to an unforeseen technical issue". Sky said in a statement. "Sky Player engineers are hard at work to resolve the problem. We expect to have the full service available on Wednesday".

The breakdown of the service on launch left gamers confused as to what had happened.

"How do i actually pull up sky on my Xbox, i have Sky Player account and an Xbox Gold Account. Confused... :S", said Sam in a comment on Pocket-lint.

"The Sky player system went "Offline" before I had a chance to try it! The current news is that it will be fully back online tomorrow (Wednesday) - so you're not alone, Jamie! Shame - I'm itching to give it a try...", said Doombar.

To access the player you'll need both an active Sky subscription and an Xbox Live Gold subscription. The former costs £15 per month, and the latter is £40 per year, totalling £220 per year. The same channels will be available to you that are available on your existing Sky subscription.

Alternatively, Sky will be selling a bundle pack of a month's Sky Player subscription (with the Sky Sports pack), a media remote, and 3 months of Xbox Live Gold subscription for £30. If you just want to try out the service without committing to a long-term plan, that could be an option.

  • Could you please publish correct information, Sky channels are only available if you have broadband max or sky multiroom. Otherwise you have to fork out another £9.75 a month for the xbox live version so that makes it £337 a year. Posted by J Ball, UK
  • "J Ball"

Sorry J your wrong you only need broadband max or sky multiroom if you want to watch Sky tv as it is shown live you can use the Sky Player service with just the basic Sky package and Gold XBL. (what you get is Sky's take on Iplayer)

  • what a bag of pants. I think everyone should be severly reprimanded for such stupid mistakes. Sky player wont effect me even when it is actually available as trying to stream a video from my xbox360 dashboard is an utter waste of time in the first place due to our terrible connection Posted by rick, uk
  • Can someone please tell me who this is aimed at? why would anybody want it over sky on a regular sky box or sky +? Posted by kev, uk
  • does anyone know an accurate time it will be back on the spotlight section? Posted by aaron, uk
  • @Kev,

It's aimed at people that can't get a Satellite dish on their home or who want Sky in a second room. It's also a cheaper entry point than installing the Sky Box.

    @Arraon,

Major Nelson just posted this to twitter:

"Live members in Ireland & UK who looking for an official update on the Sky Player->keep an eye on Xbox.com support: http://bit.ly/1hrxuG"

  • As i understand it you need sky multiroom to watch the live television on your sky package on the xbox which is a load of BS

may as well just get another sky box

  • I was led to believe this will only give you 7 or so channel, not all the channels in your sky package. Is this correct? Posted by Aff, UK
  • i have sky full package multiroom and broadband already, so get the lot free on the xbox, which is in a different room so will be pleased when this is all running smoothly! any more idea of a date for the 2nd launch? Posted by anon, uk
  • Can't wait for it Posted by Jan Chase, UK
