DROID by Motorola officially outed...

23 October 2009 1:53 GMT / By Stuart Miles

So much for a teaser campaign, Motorola has just gone live with full details of its yet unannounced handset the Droid thanks to a slip up from the website team.

The microsite, which has since been pulled, offered, albeit briefly, a plethora of details no doubt spoiling any build up from Motorola and Verizon in the run up to an expected unveiling on 28 October.

Details, and there are plenty, show that the new Android powered handset will sport a slide out QWERTY keyboard, CMDA connectivity (via Verizon) Android 2.0 (Éclair), a 5 megapixel camera, GPS, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and 3.5mm headphone jack.

On the front it will come with a 3.7-inch screen, weigh 169 grams and offer all the swings, bells and whistles that you would expect from a high-end smartphone.

On the camera front users will be able to capture video at DVD quality up to 24fps and zoom in 4x via a digital zoom. There is a dual LED flash and it features automatic focus.

The browser is the Android standard Webkit offering, however it will feature HTML 5 and Flash 10 support when available in 2010.

Accelerometer, 550MHz processor and 16GB microSD pre-installed with support up to 32GB completes the package.

Pre-installed apps include Amazon MP3, Facebook and Google apps. The phone will also support Google Voice search.

No word on pricing or availability as yet.

  • The phone is just like a typical modern touchscreen QWERTY phone. But its camera has an advance ability with its 24fps video, 4x digital zoom and its automatic focus. Posted by Niegel, Philippines
  • and it's digital compass, and it's DVD resolution camcorder, and it's ARM CORTEX -A8 based processor, etc

apart form THAT, yeah it's just another typical modern QWERTY touchscreen phone.

except, these high end phones are anything BUT typical as there aren't many.

  • Sorry, I'm over slide-out keyboards. Going into 2010 all pdaphones should have a capacitive touchscreen with a large enough ( > 3.5-in ) LCD for an on-screen keyboard. Posted by Eludium-Q36, USA
  • Have to say, I think its about 50/50 when it comes to a physical vs. virtual keyboard. They both have their uses, but I prefer a physical keyboard myself. I have both on my palm pre, but I still use the physical one more often. I certainly depends on the size of the screen though, as the Pre has a much smaller surface area. As for the specs: WOW. I mean this really should get alot of attention. I think that the only thing that can hurt the sales of this device are the overall looks and cool factor. The iPhone has the smooth, curved edges and slim design with a very slick user interface. The Palm Pre has a beautiful curved pebble design that quite frankly is just too fun to hold in your hand. The Motorola Droid has alot of bells and whistles, but is gonna hurt due to its bulky design and lack of an overall appealing look. People buy gadgets for cool status now-a-days, not neccessarily functionality. I think Motorola has a diamond in the ruff with this device, but will need to refine it a bit more for it to fully take off. Good thing Google Droid is an open source device. I think its only a matter of time before they come out with something so revolutionary that Microsoft, Apple, and any smartphone company will have to totally go back to the drawing board. If it wasn't for Google, do you really think we would have such awesome devices coming out? They open so many doors for so many technological advances. I can't wait to see what comes out next from them. I love Apple, but if they aren't careful, they are going to have the same bad luck they had with Microsoft back in the early 90's. They always come out with great technology and amazing software, only to turn their back on the consumer because of their fear of loosing control to other companies. They almost remind me of that group of cool kids from elementary and high school that wouldn't let anyone else in unless you were as cool as them. When they graduated, they ended working at McDonalds with 5 kids and watched as the geeks flew passed them with flashy cars and lots of money. Posted by Strikerage, United States
  • Virtual keyboards are always a compromise between screen space and typing speed, and slide out keyboards are a compromise between typing speed and handset size.

All we need is an input device that doesn't take up any space!
(Sadly, voice recognition is still "not quite there")
