UK Kindle owners to be charged 40% more for content

Books will cost $13.99 compared to US price of $9.99

Amazon has u-turned on its launch promise not to charge international Kindle users more than it does US consumers, in a rip-off Britain move familiar to UK-based gadget fans who often suffer from inflated pricing.

Despite Amazon stating that "there are no additional fees for international customers" when the Kindle was announced for the UK market, the Guardian has discovered that UK users will in fact be charged 40% more than those in the States.

From the paper: "An Amazon.co.uk spokesman revealed that foreign customers would be paying $13.99 (£8.75) per book instead of the American price of $9.99 (£6.25). That amounts to a 40% premium for the same title".

Although UK users won't be charged the $1.99 roaming fee that Americans will have to pay for using the device abroad, it seems this is how the etailer will recuperate the costs of data charges from AT&T's global partners for the OTA downloads.

Whether UK consumers will be happy to stump up almost half as much again as Americans pay for a digital product is yet to be seen - it certainly never hurt iTunes. Have your say on the matter in the comments box below.

  • Whenever I see that something is on sale at an inflated price I simply don't buy it. Take for example Norton software. I found that they were charging the same in pounds as dollars. So I didn't renew. If people in the UK are happy to continue to be ripped off, well, OK, be stupid and pay the inflated price. I think the price for electronic book hardware is too much anyway. The same goes for music downloads.
This long established attitude that it is OK to rip off the UK needs to be buried for good and I hope that, in these hard times, there will be a whole heap of dirt to start off that process.

  • Wait! There are much better readers arriving soon. Don't be ripped off by the USA (again). This is the country that prattles on about "intellectual property rights" and then claims the English language as it's own: don't believe me ? Next time you register software you will see "English (American)" with no alternative English (British). Just rewriting history again, soon they will have discovered penicillin! • They appear to fail to mention how much higher of a list price UK publishers charge to start with.

For example Audrey Niffenegger's new book Her Fearful Symmetry...

US publishers ebook list price $26.99 (approx £17.02)
UK publishers ebook list price £21.84 (approx $34.63)

  • I think that ebooks will be famous for new generation only. Because the real book readers are addictive to page changings. If the come up with new ebook where you can change pages like real book then that can be famous. The best upcoming ebook i think is this one http://www.domesticutilities.com/book.htm
In this century ebooks will bring many new poets and articles writers and the famous poets and writers names will disappear
