Microsoft console finally looks set to be king of the crop

Christmas 2009: The year the Xbox 360 should rule the roost

7 October 2009 2:31 GMT / By Stuart Miles

Microsoft should expect it to be an Xbox 360 Christmas this year if search queries for the games console are anything to go by.

Although the launch of the PS3 Slim caused a massive spike of interest according to search analytics firm Hitwise, Microsoft's Xbox 360 console is consistently ranking highly in searches suggesting its popularity will be strong come the Christmas rush.

"For most of 2009 the Microsoft Xbox 360 has been the most searched for games console in the UK, while the popularity of the Nintendo consoles has waned significantly", says Robin Goad, Hitwise UKs research director.

Good news for Sony is that its PS3 has maintained second place throughout most of year while Nintendo has struggled following its massive success in 2008.

Without the Wii Fit to dominate Christmas wish lists, as it did last Holiday season, Xbox 360 games are the most popular options, after all-format titles, picking up 11.9% of searches according to the firm.

  • where i live in the uk everybody has a ps3 and evrybody wants a ps3, nobody even talks of the 360 Posted by jellybalboa, uk
  • Not many people use 'Sony Playstation 3' or 'Microsoft Xbox 360' when searching. Two better search terms are 'PS3' and 'Xbox 360'.

    What a terrible fanboy article.

  • Jellybalboa,

Maybe it's everyone that doesn't yet own one searching and therefore PS3 users who already own a device don't need to search for one.

  • I agree with Jellybalboa, UK seems to be a PS3 area as is the rest of Europe , Most of my friedns who had an xbox now have a PS3 and that is now there main system or they are out right PS3 fans , I know three friends who are xbots and continually are searching for ways to fix it they don't call it the 3fixme for nothing Posted by LeViZ042, United Kingdom
  • Not only are the terms too specific, but the bottom line is that the number of times someone enters a term in a search engine does not in any clear way reflect the amount of new consumer purchase intent, but rather the amount of present interest by current users. Further, these are figures generated by using god only knows what other parameters. There are too many factors that could explain the meaning of these numbers, and whoever came up with this extrapolation that it will mean high sales numbers for Christmas must have some sort of vested interest in promoting this idea, even it is simply favoritism. This is a perfect example of how to lie with statistics. Posted by annabellelee, portugal
  • Surprised that the DSi isn't on the list, rather than the DS Lite. That's Nintendo's latest model, after all. Posted by radioedit, United Kingdom
  • 'Interesting' article, odd they chose the cut off point of the graph right about the time the PS3 price cut and slim launch came about......

As has been previously said, what a terrible fanboy biased article.

  • haha its not even sales related, what a complete load of tripe..... Posted by TH1882FC, England
  • *Sigh*, another slow article. Learn this, UK does not equal the world, and also the rest of Europe is mostly dominated by Sony, which, is way bigger than the UK (obviously).

    But anyway, good information! Thanks!
