New TomTom Start revealed by retailer

Entry-level model is £40 cheaper than TomTom's iPhone solution

According to what appears to be a leak from UK retailer eXpansys, it seems TomTom is to offer a new satnav device - the TomTom Start.

Aiming for the lower end of the market, the UK Start will be available for around £120 - which works out at about £40 cheaper than its iPhone GPS solution. The Euro version is priced at £139.99.

Said to be easy to use, the Start gets a slimline design (94 x 81 x 20mm), a 3.5-inch touchscreen and what TomTom calls "simplified menus", perhaps aimed at the GPS first-timer.

The most commonly used options are said to be "only a touch away", while the device's new "EasyPort" mount claims to let you fix the TomTom to the windscreen "simply and easily".

With smart IQ Routes technology, there's also MapShare back-up, "Help Me" functionality and a range of StartSkins sold separately to customise the look of your TomTom Start, again suggesting the device is angled towards the younger, trendier and less affluent user.

UPDATE: This is now official and the StartSkins are available in six colours for £12.95 each.

  • It looks as if this device would be a good 'entry-level' satnav for those drivers who just want to have a simple, cost-effective device from the most reliable satnav provider, that will provide the basics to see how they get on with one. If they decide they want more they can always opt for a more comprehensive device with more features at a later date. Posted by Sadie Mason, ENGLAND
  • I have just bought the European Start model with mapping for 42 countries . It has an amazingly sensitive GPS receiver and was working with 8 satellites indoors!
I have a problem though, apparently they released 500 or so of these without the full UK postcode search and mine is obviously of one of those, and it will be a 2-3 weeks before they release a software update to fix the problem. Presumably the UK only version does not suffer from this problem.

  • I've found a 2nd major problem. My TomTom Start does not show any Points of Interest on the map that is displayed when you are navigating! They are only displayed when you select Browse Map - how stupid is that!. Looks like this model was rushed out to meet the Christmas sales rush without proper testing. I'm sending mine back.
