No answer from Freeview for those still without TV

More channels lost and some signals scrambled

No answer from Freeview for those still without TV

1 October 2009 16:09 GMT / By Dan Sung

We've had an overwhelming response from Pocket-lint readers after yesterday's 30 September Freeview retune did not go according to plan. Millions of people across the UK took to their set-top boxes for the channel migration and it was well known that many thousands would lose access to ITV3 and ITV4 and that a handful with a very limited number of specific pieces of hardware would also retune to nothing whatsoever. However, despite an excellent pre-retune information campaign and judging by the crashing of the Freeview website, the overloading of the retune helpline and cries for help, not just on our pages but all over the Internet, it has not gone according to plan.

Pocket-lint has tried to contact Freeview but no one has come forward to speak and tell the public what is going on. The only message that we have received is that, from Freeview's end, the transfer of the channels has gone smoothly and that the migration is complete. For users up and down the country commenting on Pocket-lint, though, it seems a very different story:

"Have tried again and again to retune both last night and this morning, still to no avail. The helpline number has been reduced to inane instructions - I know how to retune, pity that Freeview doesn't! It's still getting stuck halfway through the retune scan and I'm still missing the vast majority of channels. Can't wait for round two of this nonsense when analogue gets switched off!!! Anyone know where else to get information?" Posted by Claire Shepherd, NI

"I have lost ITV ITV3 5 and probably more. Rubbish idea by someone to force us to re-tune when we will have to change for complete digital soon. I gave up in the end and now have to switch to analogue for the missing stations of ITV and Five. Posted by Sarah, Washington, Tyne & Wear, England

"My god i feel like im going mad, I've also lost itv2 and lots more. I also phoned up and all the lady could say was "what do you want me to do about it", and that people will just have to wait till it comes back. Friendly or what? Posted by hayley, suffolk, England

"I live in Bayswater and am using inbuilt freeview (opposed to a separate box), and we seem to have lost ITV2+1 E4 and Sky (which was 82). Is anyone else having these problems?? THIS IS SO STUPID AND FRUSTRATING!!" Posted by LC, UK

There also appears to have been interference of the new signals in Northern Ireland by neighbouring transmissions from the Republic of Ireland which could even be something far more permanent:

"Retuned my Pace PVR - but got RTE1, RTE2, TV3,and TG4 on positions 1-4 instead of the usual BBC etc - however cannot see pictures as they are the wrong mpeg version - why are Irish channels interferring with our Freeview? Signals come from the Limavady Transmitter. (My Sony TV retuned perfectly and I get all available channels) Posted by Alan, Northern Ireland

Moving the whole nation's radio and TV channels was never going to be a hitch-free procedure. There are simply too many households and too many variables, but the helpline set up by Freeview has not been able to cope with the case-by-case complaints nor the volume of calls. The worst part is that it's a national rate number. According to the Telegraph, the helpline received 200 calls a minute yesterday. If that continued for even a few hours, that's potentially thousands of pounds of the public's money to the phone line of a not for profit organisation.

There is still no advice available from Freeview beyond calling the helpline or going to the retune website, while many round the country still struggle. As one Pocket-lint reader quite succinctly put it, "Is this a conspiracy to get us all to buy Sky?"

UPDATE: The official Freeview response has come in. Here it is in full:

1) Are there still any problems from Freeview's end or has the transfer 100% completed?

There were no problems with the upgrade to the Freeview service, which was completed on schedule, and viewers were advised to retune from lunchtime onwards. Earlier in the day, the TV retune website experienced a high volume of traffic but continued to provide retuning information throughout the day - at times using an overspill page which included a basic retuning guide.

2) There seem to be a number of people who do not have the problem equipment as listed on the Freeview site but have either lost more channels than they should have or continue to be unable to receive anything at all. Do you know why this might be and is there any chance that it is nothing to do with their set up at home; problems with transmitters etc

Viewers are advised to perform a full retune, sometimes called a 'first time installation' or 'factory reset', in order to pick up all available channels in their area. It is rare for people to lose channels but sometimes a second (or third) retune may be required to resolve these issues. They should also check all cables and connections are secure. If, after this, viewers are still missing channels, we would recommend they contact the manufacturer. All signals are broadcasting as expected.

3) What advice can you give to people who have followed all the steps as laid out on the Freeview site but are still experiencing problems?

It is difficult to provide specific advice without more details, such as the make and model of equipment, but if viewers have performed a full retune more than once and are still experiencing problems we would advise contacting their manufacturer or retailer.

4) It's obviously a very large operation to migrate all the channels and make sure the public retunes. Did you expect there to be as many problems as there has been?

Again, there were no problems with the upgrade to the service. Experience shows that the majority of people find retuning straightforward, but some viewers do need a little extra advice. Help with retuning is available on the tvretune.co.uk website and via a helpline on 08456 051122. Viewers can also get advice on retuning from family and friends or their local retailer.

5) Many people have been getting an automated message on the help line which doesn't seem to help in many cases. Will you be setting up a problem solving line for case by case situations?

At peak times yesterday, a team of more than 300 advisors, backed up by recorded retune instructions, were helping several hundred callers a minute. We would recommend that viewers with specific equipment issues contact the manufacturer or retailer.

  • We have tried, time and time again to get ITV 2+1, but it seems to have disappeared as well as channel Five (Still get Five USA + Fiver) this is a head scratcher as all the other channels we previously got are still there ,apart from ITV2+1 and Five. It's comforting to know were not going mad and not the only ones have this problem ! Posted by Michael Coupland , UK
  • i live in cumbria, when we switched over to digital in 2009 freeview gave us some channels, but not all. now they have taken itv3 itv4 community channel off us , why . anwser so more people can get channel5. i think people would rather keep itv3 and itv4. Posted by nicholas wilfred hay, england
  • Note to above commenter and anyone else... The issue is *NOT* with Freeview, but with your Set Top Box. The transmissions are working correctly, and performing a full rescan should provide you with all channels. If you do not, then it is a fault with your STB, or you have not performed a full rescan. Consult your STB's manual, or set up instructions, or contact the maker of your STB. It should be a matter of selecting something like 'Full Rescan', 'Factory Reset' or 'Initial Setup' from your device's menu. Posted by JayBlanc, UK
  • Very clever way of getting you used to the fact that you will have to buy new kit come HD retune...;)
    Posted by pazz, UK
  • JayBlanc with respect, although YOU may have had no problems or lost channels after yesterday's the retune but there have been many people that have done FULL retunes with fairly new equipment that wasn't on the "may not work" list .
The internet is full of forums that suggest many people experiencing problems.....there will be many many thousands more that don't post in forums that have also lost channels.

Essentially the problem may well lie with Freeview who perhaps didn't do their homework properly ,and vastly underestimated the numbers of Freeview devices that the retune would negatively effect.
    Posted by KL, UK
  • KL... Any Freeview branded hardware should have been able to handle the channel lineup change, had the manufacturer stuck to the specifications required.

The retune has worked fine on compliant, functional hardware, after a full rescan has been performed.

If your hardware isn't compliant, then it's the original makers fault, contact them.
If you have a freeview branded box, but don't know how to do a full rescan, then you need to find the manual.
If you threw away the manual, tough luck, learn from the mistake.

The fault does not lie with the Freeview broadcasters, who've broadcast signals that should be accepted by any Freeview branded electronics after a full rescan.
    Posted by JayBlanc, UK
  • JayBlanc you seem to be missing the point somewhat!

It has very little to do with people not knowing how to do a full rescan!

You say Any Freeview branded hardware "should" have been able to handle the change.

The operative would is "should" have.....and that's what the Freeview spokesperson have been saying.
However the reality is that many many more Freeview devices "HAVE" been having trouble......and we are not talking about just cheap, obscure, or old products here!
We are talking new high branded products as well.

It remains my view that Freeview have moved the goal posts somewhat making more equiptment to have problems than just those devices listed on the Freeview Retune website.

Just taking a look at the numerous internet forums and the various problems that people are having with various different brands of equipment will tell you that it is not simply a manufacturer problem.

  • I always thought that Freeview tuners would be 'prompted to check for signal/channel updates themselves via a broadcast token. The decade old technology in my car radio can do it... but it seems that my state-of-the-art goggle-box cannot.

    Sad face.
    Posted by L.Rawlins, UK
  • Totally agree with KL. I believe Freeview have moved the goal posts beyond the remit of their working specifications. My STB has failed to get past 39UHF and I'm now faced with having to subsidise other users in effect by buying a new one. It's an utter farce and comments such as JayBlanc's are not helpful - do you really think that the majority of users are too stupid to know how to retune? After all it is only one menu button press away. I'm furious. Posted by M.Lock, UK
  • I used to love the office with Ricky Gervais, If I could only call you JayBlanc, it would be - "you're a cock"!
JayBlanc, don't go to the middle east - you will only make thing worse!
Do one, as there is a virtual mob coming after you.

  • I re-tune and now Channel 5 is 800, ITV3 is 801, ITV4 is 802! Who's idea is it to do this? Did they do any testing. Posted by Manuel Flores, United Kingdom
  • Some people in the world don't have enough food to eat or even a home to live in, and you're fretting about losing a few TV channels! You people need to be grateful for what you do have and stop moaning about what you don't. Posted by Scott Diamond, UK
  • I had a problem whereby Channel 5 and the ITV3 and ITV4 stations were missingafter a retune - multiple re-tunes didnt help. I found that if I, first, deleted all of the channels using the box's channel management facility and then performed a re-tune then all channels were found. I'm using a HUMAX 9200T PVR. Hope this helps someone. Posted by Chris H, UK
  • As Chris H says... A Full Rescan is where the box deletes *all* the channels and replaces them with the lineup as currently broadcast. It's been clearly said that you need to do a *full* reset of the channels, the video tutorial that was provided by Freeview for several months before this even clearly says you may need to do a full factory reset.

I suspect most people complaining have either only done an 'update' rescan, lost their manual and don't know how to do a factory reset, or are using non-freeview branded boxes or IDTVs.

I can tell some people have not done a full rescan, as they are also complaining that they don't want to lose their 'favourite channels' settings and so on. Not that they can keep them, as the channel numbers are changing on some channels!

If you have a problem, *Do A Full Factory Reset Of Your STB*. If you do not know how to do so, and have lost your manual, contact the makers of your STB. If they say the STB is broken, and doesn't do a full rescan properly, then complain about it to them and perhaps choose a different make next time.
    Posted by JayBlanc, UK
  • JayBlanc, what is it that you don't understand!!!

Lots of people HAVE performed a FULL rescan and not just an update!

They are STILL missing channels.......don't you get it whilst you have experienced no problems, others that have done a FULL rescan have!

  • At the risk of being pelted, some people may find it helps if they switch their box off at the wall, remove the leads (including the aerial lead), reconnect everything firmly (making sure the aerial cable has a good connection) and switch everything back on again before doing the full retune/first time install/default settings/factory settings - whatever your manufacturer calls it. The full retune is supposed to be as if you have set it up for the first time. Worth a shot.

  • HI, i CONTACTED THE FREEVIEW HELPLINE to say that although the signal I have is great it only lasts for 30 seconds then a 5.00 timer appears on the screen and the picture disappears for 10 to 30 seconds before the great signal reappears? The very nice young scottish man I spoke to said "sorry about that, but we are only here to advise on getting the signal, not problems once you have it".?? I asked if he could check the signal and also asked if I needed an aerial upgrade to whichnhe answered "I don't know, we don't deal with that. I said, that is most helpful, to which he replied sorry, but we can't do anymore!!! How frustrating. Currently, I am watching in 30 second tops oundbites, Cheers freeview!! Posted by J Hutchings, England
  • J Hutchings these are the rather unhelpful comments made by the Freeview Managing Director:

Ilse Howling, managing director of Freeview, turning a deaf ear to the growing wave of protests

" Howling said, in a freewheeling chat with BBC's David Sillito.

Howling also said she fails to understand why the retuning process is generating so much adverse media attention as it is not a "difficult process" and "most people should be able to do it quite easily."

"What you do is press on your remote control, press the menu button and then go to an option called setting and do a full retune which will reset the boxes to factory settings," she said.

It would be helpful if Ms.Howling actually tried to figure out why people were complaining rather than automatically assume the consumer is at fault by not knowing how to to do a full rescan!

This reminds me of the Renault faulty bonnet catch fiasco when despite widespread reports of the Renault Clio car bonnet dangerously flying open when the person is driving the car.
Renault denied there was a problem until the BBC watchdog got on the case and eventually there was a recall of the Renault Clio for safety checks.
A former Renault manager told the BBC that Renault knew that there was a problem with the bonnet catch on the clio but decided to not inform owners because of the costs involved in a nationwide recall!

Is Ms.Howling simarly underplaying the Freeview retune problems because of some costs involved?.....makes you wonder.

  • ITV2+1
after re-tune has moved from channel 27 to 33
but channel 33 is misnamed as "ITV" instead of "ITV2+1"

channel 27 has no name, and if selected displays a message
that ITV2+1 has moved to channel 33

Why is channel 33 not named correctly ?
Why should channel 27 be even included in the channel list after re-tune ?

Why is there not an email contact on the Freeview web-site ?
    Posted by Derek Cotton, England
  • Dereck my tv shows the message "ITV =1 has moved to 33"......only my Toshiba tv won't display Channel 33!

There is no email contact on the Freeview website because the Freeview Managing Director is only concerned with getting the Freeview signals broadcast.......by her comments it seems she has little concerns with anyone that have missing channels or problems.....as far as she is concerned her job is done!
It's a bit like trying to return a product to a shop because you didn't think it was working as advertised, but the shop keeper keeps insisting there is nothing wrong with the product!
    Posted by KL, UK
  • I have retuned and the stations seem to be working. However I have no EPG for channel 5 whilst I can view the actual programmes.. I used to receive the EPG OK. Any ideas. Posted by Phil Brain, England
  • I must have lost around 10 Freeview channels when re-tuning my Sony Bravia TV. Oddly, my Sony HD/DVD recorder has picked up most of the missing channels, even both devices are on the same aerial. I also note that all those shopping, auction and casino channels (which I will delete) haved been installed as before and work perfectly, whereas some of the 'proper' channels e.g. Channel 4 are now breaking up i.e. pixelating.

My parents in law re-tuned their Sharp Aquos TV and all the channels now have the wrong numbers and are in the wrong order. I can't find any constructive advice from Sharp, Freeview or any other organisation to cure it.

What a shambles. I don't believe the Freeview flannel about improving the service. I think it is all about improving coverage for advertisers and other people who want to sell cheap jewellery, etc.

  • It's so helpful to know that I'm stupid. Afterall, I checked my STB model against the list of makes that wouldn't work and used the postcode checker to make sure I ought to be able to receive all channels and then I dug out the manual and followed the first time installation to the letter as advised by Freeview. Then when it went wrong I tried to contact Freeview who gave me exactly the same instructions as I'd already followed. I then contacted the manufacturer of my STB who told me to contact Freeview. An interesting cycle of events. I've retuned daily since last Wednesday and I can get channels in the 900s but nothing of any interest.

So it's really most helpful of people like Jayblanc to pioint out that I must be stupid! I'm also relieved to know that there were no problems whatsoever with the retune! I assume now it's just a case of buying a new STB and hoping for the best. It's so frustrating that Freeview have decided we're all stupid and that everything went well from their point of view.

  • I've just done a full reset of my Samsung TV which has built in Freeview having read all the comments and dug out my user manual and this has not helped - it came back with the same 50 channels and I now don't have ITV, Channel 4, Channel 5 along with a whole host of further channels that I am missing. To add insult to injury I've just had my Sky box replaced today as it was one of the recall boxes and the new box has stopped working so I am stuck without any channels hardly at all. To say the least I am not happy! Posted by R White, UK
  • I have 5 freeview products, ie. 2TVs, 1 VCR, 1PC and a digibox. They all worked fine for 95% of the time. After the retune I can watch all the channels 95% of the time, except for all of the BBC channels where the signal is now so bad that they are completed un-watchable. This does not only apply to me but also to everyone in the village I have spoken to. One friend waited until after the retune to buy a new TV and VCR and have a new aerial installed, and guess what, the signal on all the BBC channels is crap. When I checked the diagnostics on an LG tv, it showed the signal strength as very good 90% but the signal quality was very poor at only 5%! Digital TV was billed in the adverts as being the best thing since sliced bread, now it seems even wet leaves can stop the signal. The people next door are so feed up with it all that moved over the freesat HD, having seen the picture they get I will do the same. Posted by john, UK
