The date for the availability of the new, free software for Mac using BlackBerry owners has been confirmed as 2 October.

The free download claims to make it easy to sync data between Mac applications and BlackBerry smartphones.

The solution will syncs contacts, calendar appointments, tasks and notes from Mac applications like iCal, Address Book, Microsoft Entourage and others, as well as add and remove applications, schedule automatic backups, encrypt backup files and install software updates.

In addition BlackBerry Media Sync will mean Mac users can sync their BlackBerrys with iTunes - as long as Apple plays along, that is.

BlackBerry Desktop Manager software is designed to run on Mac computers with Mac OS 10.5.5 and higher and supports BlackBerry smartphones running BlackBerry OS 4.2 and higher.

The free download will be available from www.blackberry.com/mac from 1.00pm EDT on the 2nd.
