Sky Player coming to Xbox 360 in October?

Update expected to include Facebook and Twitter, too

28 September 2009 17:31 GMT / By Duncan Geere

It's rumoured that the next Xbox 360 update will be arriving in October. The October issue of Sky Magazine says that the Sky Player will be avaialble to download on the console, and a web address that the publication links to also features "OCT" in the url.

The service was announced earlier in the year, but hasn't been available until now. To use it, you'll need two active subscriptions - one for Xbox Live Gold membership, costing £40 per year, and one for Sky Player - £15 per month, which is £180 for a year. Is on-demand TV on your Xbox worth £220 per year to you?

Along with Sky Player, it's expected that the already-announced Facebook and Twitter integration (which also require Xbox Live Gold) will be included in the update. We'll bring you more news of the Dashboard refresh when it's officially announced.

  • £220 a year? Thats a little bit more than getting the BBC's iPlayer on the PS3 which is completely free. Posted by JJMcClure, UK
  • there is already both available in my house but the sky is under my housemates name will i be able to get sky player? Posted by lee loveridge, england
  • Will this be available outside of the UK, in place such as Austria? Posted by John, Winston
  • JJMcClure, PS3 might have Iplayer which is free, but does it have sky sports and movies?

    No. Now shut up.

  • Oh and this is free for all customers who already have sky. Posted by james, England
  • It's not free for customers who already have Sky if you still need an XBox Live Gold membership as well. And does that £15/mo include Sky Movies and Sky Sports? Not according to http://www.itvt.com/story/5709/sky-player-xbox-360-launch-mid-october; you still have to pay the premium subs for those on top at between £16 and £25 per month extra (assuming you don't subscribe to them on your regular Sky account). • The point is that if you already subscribe to Sky and Live Gold then this is a great feature and I can't wait to try it out. Posted by Matt, England
  • Everyone with an Xbox 360 already pays 4.99 a month for Xbox Live anyway - we wouldn't have it any other way. The benefits far outweight the cost. (Unlike Playstation network which is free but provides nothing of value).

My PS3 was the biggest waste of money on a gadget yet! Aside from the Music it us very much trailing Xbox 360. There are so many more advantages to having an Xbox 360 over a PS3! This is why PS3 marketshare is dissapearing, PS3 users are making the move!

Don't be stubborn and fight it! See you online :0

  • People Who Think Ps3's Are Better Than Xbox's Should Just Admit, That Xbox's Are better, Yes Ps3 Online Is Free, But Any Sane Person Would Pay £40 (Or Less Depends Where You Get It). To Play Some Great online Gaming. Posted by Brodie, Scotland
  • Just to let people no that i am not a fanboy.

Ps3 is a entertainment hub that provides alot then you think.

To James comment yes you can watch sky sport on your ps3.

im going to give you 10 pointers about the PS3 that beats the xbox360.

    1. Watch movies (AVI, MPEG, WMV)
    2. Blu-ray movies (As xbox360 failed with HD DVD)
    3. Music (play music or you can listen to stream music)
    4. look at you pictures (PS3 picture album)
    5. Play games (Uncharted 2 best game ever)
    6. BBC iplayer (BBC what more can you say, Top Gear)
    7. You can watch live TV on your PS3 web browser (sky sports, movies, etc)
    8. Browse the internet with you ps3 web browser
    9. Remote play (PSP, sony ericsson)
    10. And its FREE
    Posted by Liammad, UK
  • And other pointer for the PS3 to sell 1,230,00 in a month. xbox360 could never do that. Posted by Liammad, UK
  • To the guy above me who wrote:

    1. So can Xboxs
    2. Blu-ray really isnt that good! Expensive shit too.
    3. woah musix? so can we...
    4. So can we...
    5. So can we...
    6. Freeview TV (which you dont have to buy for £300+ as you would for a ps3 just for that?? Or you could simply use the iplayer on the web? Anyways Top Gear barely has any new episodes nowadays.
    7. I dont believe you can do this on the PS3, even if you can we now have sky (:
    8. I've tried this on my PS3 downstairs, pile of wank hardest shit in the world to use, not fast browsing at all, rather use my laptop.
    9. Not as good as a normal controller
    10. That argument for the PS3 is just cheap to be fair, I'd rather pay and get better service, Sony cant rely on free forever. Microsoft will be making enough money from Xbox Live which to be fair is not that expensive, max £40 a year which is a puny £3.30 a month. People dont realise how small that is!
