Google Wave approaches public beta

100,000 testers to get access on 30 September

Google Wave - the company's attempt to combine IM, email, and sharing functionality into an open-source communications platform - will be rolling out to the first lot of beta testers on 30 September. If you'd like to know more, hit play on the video above for a 10-minute abridged version of the hour-and-twenty-minute demo video from earlier in the year.

As previously reported on Pocket-lint, Google wrote in a blog post back in July: "We plan to start extending the Google Wave preview beyond developers on September 30th. This will take place on wave.google.com rather than the separate 'sandbox' instance we are currently using, and we plan to involve about 100,000 users".

If you want to be one of those 100,000, then it's probably a good idea to head over to wave.google.com pretty sharpish, and volunteer to sell your soul by clicking the "Let me know when it's ready" box and volunteering to do as much as they ask you to in terms of reporting bugs.

  • I've been in the semi-private beta and have been pretty impressed so far. It's a good first step to wean knowledge workers off of email. The IM aspect makes for a more rewarding collaboration experience. It is really easy to embed a wave in just about any web page. Extending wave with your own programs, called robots, is also pretty easy. It looks like a "no go" for IE users, however. Posted by Glenn, USA
  • This looks like it will be extremely helpful to researchers and other academics in sharing the writing of research papers and doing research. It will shorten the process by not having to send the writing back and forth for changes, editing, etc. Posted by Jon Heise, USA
