Samsung announces Genio Qwerty

Corby TXT comes to the UK

24 September 2009 17:12 GMT / By Duncan Geere

It can be tricky keeping up with the different names for products in different markets. Samsung has launched this phone under the Genio Qwerty tag in Britain, but outside of this fair isle it's called the Corby TXT. Confusing.

Whatever you want to call it, the handset is a candybar QWERTY - like a BlackBerry. It has a 2.2-inch TFT, a 2-meapixel camera, FM radio, 3.5mm headphone jack and microSD card slot. It doesn't have 3G, but to make up for that it has changable battery covers, which Samsung has dubbed "Fashion Jackets".

The handset has a customisable homescreen, quick launch buttons and supports Twitter, Facebook and YouTube. "The Genio Qwerty offers those who prefer a keyboard rather than a touch screen the opportunity to have the great looks and features that come with the Genio range", said Mark Mitchinson, VP Samsung Mobile UK and Ireland.

The Genio Qwerty will be showing up in early October in Britain, and it'll be exclusive to Orange initially. It comes in "vibrant yellow", with a black front panel.

  • I'm getting one for christmas, it looks awesome. People say that it's just a cheaper alternative to the Blackberry, or a Blackberry alternative for young people, which is all well and good, but may lead to a 'cheap cast-off' stereotype. For the record, I had the choice of either getting this or getting the Blackberry for my birthday, and I chose the Samsung Genio QWERTY, purely because I prefer it. Posted by Sam, the girl, England
