Sony Motion Controller confirmed for spring 2010

Sony has confirmed that it will be releasing its Motion Controller in Spring 2010

Offering no product announcements following high profiles refreshes of both its PSP and PS3 lines earlier in the year, Sony PlayStation boss Kaz Hirai instead used his keynote at the Tokyo Games Show in Japan to outline previously announced technologies the company was working on.

That included dishing out some but not many details on the new controller that the company hopes will allow it to take on Nintendo and it's Wii Console.

According to gaming site Joystiq, who were live blogging the event, "Hirai hopes this device will also meet the "stringent" requirements of hardcore gamers."

It will feature "Image recognition, depth detection, and gyros" allowing gamers to interact with games more than they currently can.

Unfortunately that is all Hirai had to say on the matter only adding "very accurate movement can be realized with the added slight vibration feedback.

Unfortunately no games where demoed with the new technology.

UPDATE: According to Sony:

"The newly announced Motion Controller is equipped with two motion sensors, three axes gyroscope and three axes accelerometer that can detect the controller’s angle and movement held in the user’s hand. Together with the PlayStation Eye camera for PS3 which can accurately track the absolute position of the controller, the controller can detect the natural and intuitive movement of the hand and reflect the precise movement on to the game.

"The sphere placed on the top of the controller is not only used to track the absolute position but can also give visual feedback to users by changing the colors or the illuminating patterns of the sphere. Furthermore, the new controller is also equipped with a rumble feature, familiar to the PlayStation DUALSHOCK series controller, delivering immersive gaming experience to users."
