Garmin has expanded its c-series of GPS units unveiling the StreetPilot C500 series at CeBIT in Hannover, Germany.Based on Garmin's c300 series, the StreetPilot c500 series features Bluetooth and integrated traffic capabilities.
For added security, Garmin has also developed a theft prevention system for the new models. Users will have to type in a specific 4-digit PIN or take the unit to a predetermined secure location code.
If the user does not know the PIN or secure location, the StreetPilot will be inoperative.
Specific features of the new StreetPilot c550 include Bluetooth capability with an integrated microphone and dual speakers similar to TomTom's 700 model that allows users to connect their handset to the device to make calls.
The StreetPilot c550 includes a traffic receiver integrated into the power cable which provides real-time traffic services.
The StreetPilot c550 comes with pre-loaded maps of Europe or North America.
The StreetPilot c510D "deluxe" package includes one of nine pre-programmed European map regions and a DVD-ROM with fully unlocked European map coverage. The "deluxe" version also includes the same integrated traffic receiver and services as the C550.
European customers looking for a streamlined version can opt for the StreetPilot c510, which includes a pre-programmed regional European map data and no traffic receiver.
Garmin will also offer a StreetPilot c530 model, which is sold exclusively in North America, with all maps pre-loaded.
Finally there will be a version designed specifically for Smart car owners to fit the cockpit of Smart's Fortwo and Forfour models.
All models are sold with a carrying case, suction cup mount, adhesive dash mount, 12-volt adapter, and PC/USB cable. Map data for all units is provided by NAVTEQ.
All models are expected to be available in the second quarter of 2006. The company has yet to confirm pricing.
Aside from launching the new c series today, Garmin also announced the launch of its all-in-one Personal Travel Assistant; The nuvi 310 and nuvi 360 at CeBIT in Hannover.
The new devices will incorporate Bluetooth, as well as, a GPS navigator, MP3 player, audio book player, language translator, travel guide, currency converter, world travel clock, and the promise of much more in one box. Car And GPS, GPS, Garmin, CeBIT2006
