Apple investigating iPhone battery issues

Following iPhone 3.1 updates

21 September 2009 16:45 GMT / By Duncan Geere

Apple has contacted a number of users about the problems that Pocket-lint reported as afflicting the iPhone 3G following the 3.1 update. The company has got in touch with 11 followup questions asking about their settings.

Most are about push email, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and various apps, but question ten asks: "When you notice a power drop, does it seem to be a legitimate power drop, or rather an issue with the battery icon indicator?".

Users are also being asked to install a bit of software that enables battery life logging on the phone, which are then sent back to Apple when the user syncs their handset. Apple has recommended that users don't go more than a couple of days without syncing thanks to the size of these files.

Meanwhile, we're hearing that other users are having issues with their handsets since the most recent update. Some are complaining of their handsets switching off randomly on a daily basis, and others are having problems with the accelerometer.

Are these, or any other problems, afflicting your iPhone experience? Let us know in the comments and we'll keep on top of what's going on.

  • hi,
my iphone 3g screen turns off and on constantly. When it happends i cannot use any of the functions and no button works. It seems to always happen when i lock it. I downloaded 3.1 and it wan't until a week later when this started. I was going to go into apple store last weekend but i though it had stopped until, at the end of the weekend, it started up again. It is very annoying and can be off for 10 mins

  • Yes my phone (8g 3G) turns off randomly at times. It also has been taking a LONG time to open applications and when it does open the screen often will freeze making it impossible to text, write and email, etc. I charge my phone every night and I just noticed yesterday that my battery is dying after only a few hours of being on. This happens without making a call and only sending a few texts. I used to be able to make it through the day without charging. It also feels hot. I'm wondering if Apple will replace my iPhone since I just got it less than a year ago. Posted by Lolly, United States
  • 32gb 3GS..since the last update...accelorometer only works intermittently now :( Posted by taz, UK
  • im iphone 8bg 3g now freezed at least once a day. phone has to be left until it resolves its issues or the power button has to be pressed for at least a minute until the screen comes back to life. also noticed that apps are appearing to get stuck - facebook is having problems quitting back to home screen - resulting in needing to turn phone off. not noticed any battery issues yet!!! • since i upgraded my 16 gb 3G iphone to 3.1 I am experiencing severe and rapid battery depletion with no difference in usage. It appears to discharge more than twice as fast as it used to with no different usage. Other quirky things happening too. Freezed ups, 30 second delays on text input, popping out of apps that used to run without issue. I'm hoping they get this fixed quickly. Posted by Laura, us
  • My iphone drops battery power precipitously from around 60% to 40% inside of a minute or so.. The strange thing is that when I plug it in to charge it goes up to around 70% immediately, but then seems to lose power fairly quickly with hardly any use at all. Posted by Jeffrey, Unite States
  • I keep my phone plugged in at work during the day otherwise it won't last me the train ride home. I upgraded to 3.1 yesterday and today when I unplugged the phone for lunch I was below 20%. I had to completely power down to get the phone to charge again. Posted by JEP, USA
