Will AmazonBasics come to the UK?

Amazon releases unbranded cables, blank media

21 September 2009 9:52 GMT / By Duncan Geere

Amazon has launched a range of "Basics" products in the US - a self-branded set of bog-standard cables, blank CDs, blank DVDs, etc. The company says that additional accessories and other items will be added to the range in the coming months.

Amazon's Paul Ryder - VP Consumer Electronics - says: "We saw an opportunity to create a line of consumer electronics basics that combine quality and low prices for an overall focus on value". All the products will ship in the company's "frustration-free packaging", meaning easy-to-open cardboard boxes in favour of blister packs.

The full list of available cables runs: 15m Ethernet, 3m HDMI, 1.8m USB-A to USB-B, 3m USB extension, 4m Ethernet, 3m HDMI to DVI, 2m braided HDMI, 1m USB extension, 1.8m FireWire, 1m USB to mini-USB, 1.8m RCA Component, 2m HDMI, 3m braided HDMI, and 1.8m optical. There's also 100- and 50-packs of blank CD-R and DVD+R and -R media.

It's not clear whether the company will be rolling out the same range of products in the UK or not, but we're sure that cash-strapped home cinema enthusiasts will be hoping they do. We'll keep you posted.
