Orange HTC Hero ROM update out

T-Mobile G2 customers still left waiting

Orange HTC Hero ROM update out

20 September 2009 2:13 GMT / By Stuart Miles

HTC has released a ROM update for Orange customers using the newly launched HTC Hero.

Although the official HTC update has been available for almost a week for Hero owners who bought the phone outside of an Orange or T-Mobile contract in the UK, the two UK carriers of the handset appear to be dragging their heels, claiming they were still testing the new update.

On the 17 September T-Mobile told us: "The update is currently being tested and will be issued to customers when it is ready. There is no indication of a time frame for this as yet, but we will let you know as soon as we have any more information".

Although the Orange website still seems to be silent on the availability of the new update, HTC has added a link to the Orange specific update on its support pages.

The ROM update promises to increase the performance of the phone dramatically, although doesn't add any new features or services.

Users will require a PC to install the update and should note that doing so wipes all the data from the phone.

At the rime of writing T-Mobile has yet to make its G2 update available.

Thanks Centaur and kaine

  • Yes !! Downloads in 6 minutes, really clear instructions, installed in 3 minutes. My phone is Orange UK, and works 100% faster !! Thanks again all you guys for chasing this up. Posted by Phil, UK
  • I installed the update from htc with a 3rd party rom loader, and works really well and means i don't get all the orange extras that slow down the phone.
people on t mobile i recommend you look into this.

  • Yes! Another happy Orange UK customer! Very easy to update and the phone is now much more responsive, as it always should have been! This phone gets off lightly with the 'Orange' extras. Just a loading screen and bookmarks. Posted by Jp, UK
  • worked a treat, seems more responsive now , less laggy Posted by simon, uk
  • unbelieveable how easy it was to do and how fast it is now. Posted by Tony Hedges, UK
  • i am so frustrated i can't find the update on the Orange pages, does anyone have an address? Posted by paul, UK
  • Visit the 'united kingdom' section of the HTC support pages. Easy to get from there. Posted by Jp, uk
  • Here is a direct link to the update

Update was done in less than 10mins, much more responsive and only a brief orange splash screen at the start. Well worth installing.

  • Orange have stated they DO NOT endorse the Orange update on the HTC website, and that if installed you will VOID your Orange warranty. You will still be supported by HTC, but that warranty only last 12 months and is held by Orange rather than you. Posted by liam, uk
  • Seems rather odd to me that HTC (a very big supplier to Orange) would be allowed to post something with Orange's branding on it that would render the phones warranty void and Orange do nothing about it.

Especially as every big techie/gadget site has it in their news section that it's available for Orange users now.

In fact, 'The Register' state that Orange called them to let them know it was there.

  • Well, I tried to install the update but never got further than the Install Shield Preparing Setup-screen. It just vanishes & then nothing happens. No idea. Posted by Dutchcloggie, UK
  • my alarms stopped working since downloading this new update. i downloaded an alarm program from the Market app, and then the HTC alarm worked fine. Strange.

Apart from that, I#m not sure whether its phycological but i think the phones faster, but it was always fast for me anyway :D

  • Tried every which way to get the download. The web page does not let you tick the "have read the warning" box so therefore I cannot procede past this page. To be fair, my phone does not seem slow but as like most gadgeteers, I would like to have the latest kit. Posted by Empire Rick, England
  • Gutted, been waiting for this update and i've left my charging cable at home!

got to wait till this evening to do it, but i'll be straight on it.

  • All seems ok, as previously stated seems less laggy... thing the touch screen driver has been updated.

only thing i have noticed is the twitter app Peep doesn't seem to work correctly, not updating tweets (twits??)

  • HTC is aware of the Peep issue and is looking into it. It's tweeting updates:

  • JP - beleive what you want. I've been told this by several Orange support staff, and escalated the query up the chain, via phone and email. They states that you will void your warranty with orange if you install it yourself from the htc site. Posted by liam, UK
  • @ Liam - My apologies. I should have gotten my own facts before spouting opinion.

Although it's an odd situation, you're absolutely right. Through work contacts, and a support email which resulted in Orange phoning me back, I can confirm that neither their Customer Support Department, nor their Technical Support Department know anything about this update. They shared my concern that it's available on HTC's site with Orange branding and that there are articles across the web encouraging people to update their phones, without the mention that this potentially invalidates both warranty and insurance.

It's a great update, but do proceed with caution.

  • Ok, I literallty typed that and Orange called me again!

They've now been told it's fine to do. Front Line Technical and Customer Support will be made aware over the next few days.

    So enjoy! :-)
