Spotify Premium subscriber percentage not double digits

Percentage remains low, despite mobile app

Spotify's CEO, Daniel Ek, has revealed that paid subscriber numbers are still low, despite the surge in popularity following the release of applications for the iPhone and Android mobile phones which require a premium subscription.

He made the disclosure while refusing to give absolute numbers at the Royal College of Physicians in London. During the talk he also revealed that the service is growing 50% month-on-month and saying again that he's not competing against iTunes - he's competing against piracy, and winning.

"There have been a lot of surveys of user behaviour, post-Spotify. One point seems consistent throughout them: that 80% of Spotify users say they have stopped filesharing. And, for the majority, it hasn't affected their spending", he said.

Lastly, he discussed the future - saying that he wants to do more interesting things with playlists and offer "real sharing and management tools" for making it easier for people to handle music. It'll be interesting to see what they come up with.
