Orange and T-Mobile holding back HTC Hero update

Consumers unable to access new ROM features

Orange and T-Mobile holding back HTC Hero update

17 September 2009 18:01 GMT / By Duncan Geere

Following our post about HTC releasing its ROM update to UK HTC Hero owners, we were inundated with a hail of comments saying that the software update - which promises considerably improved performance and touch-to-focus functionality for the camera - wasn't available for Orange and T-Mobile branded versions of the HTC Hero.

So we did a bit of investigation, and got in touch with all three companies to find out what on earth is going on. It turns out that the reports are correct - HTC told us that the ROM update is for HTC customers only, and that Orange and T-Mo have their own schedule for releasing the software to their customers.

T-Mobile then told us: "The update is currently being tested and will be issued to customers when it is ready. There is no indication of a time frame for this as yet, but we will let you know as soon as we have any more information". The chaps over at T3 also discovered that T-Mobile's support forum is "going bezerk" with more than 30 pages of customers complaining that the update isn't available.

No word from Orange as yet, but the company's PR team has told us that it's looking into it. We'll continue to hassle the companies to try and find out when the upgrade will be available for owners of branded phones, and the moment we hear anything, you'll be the first to know.

In the meantime, there's always the slightly iffy option of rooting your Android device - the equivalent of iPhone jailbreaking - and then manually installing the ROM. We wouldn't recommend that, though, unless you're very confident in what you're doing, and don't mind voiding your warranty.

  • I have the orange branded Hero,
-and the only difference to a nonbranded is a 1990īs style animation when i open switch on the phone plus a orange world bookmark in the favorites.

adding these features takes its time.

  • Just root it and update through MoDaCo's update. Easy and works a treat! There's even a video on youtube to talk you through the whole process! Go on, you know you want to! Posted by Chris Brown, UK
  • You don't even need to Root your orange handset to install the zip based update from Modaco. Just install the modified bootloader, make a nadroid backup, copy update.zip to your sd card then use the bootloader to unstall it. Easy and works a treat! Posted by Alex P, UK
  • Alex P, could give a more detailed explanation of this process (i'm new to this)
    Thanks.

  • Takes the piss a bit... My Hero is often unusable because the lag when texting is unbearable. I may install a custom mod. Scared of fucking the thing up though. Posted by Kaine, uk
  • Congratulations to Orange ! My HTC Hero is a great peice of kit, but Orange have managed to screw it all up by being the last to sort themselves out with the Android system.
I dont want to invalidate my warantee so I have to now waite for Orange ( who are not so bright ) to get out of the dark ages and enable me to intergrate my phone with Outlook on my computer. Isnt this basic stuff these days?

  • What benefits are there in having an Orange warranty?

I have my phone insured by a third party so if it was to break I can just use them to fix it so i'm not sure the warranty would be any use to me...unless someone can tell me otherwise?

  • Reliving the horror all over again.

I had the same problem when I used to have an N95 from O2. The initial version was dead slow and Nokia said they released a firmware update which fixed those issues. But my software update shows no updates available because apparently O2 has to "brand" the firmware. It took 4 months before O2 released the update.
Since then I moved to iPhone and was happy that the updates were rolled out without any problems. I thought that Hero would have the same kind of update procedure. Alas I was wrong and seeing this sh*t happening all over again.

  • Installed the Orange ROM update from HTC.com and the hero flies (thanks Centaur). Curiously update not visible on Orange's website - HTC to the rescue, Orange silent - would love to meet their PR guy. Notice different version number on Orange release - any idea if anything different?

  • Just finished updating the latest Rom on my Orange HTC Hero, now 9.50 am (GMT). The update took about 3 minutes. Everything ok, could`nt have been easier.

Updated using Windows 7 and using the latest Sync software from HTC.

Now to see if there is ant speed increase or anything different.

Once, thanks for the post Centaur.

  • T-Mobile
    LAST AS ALWAYS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Im in IT. I would have thought that if HTC thought it safe to launch the update, all TMobile have to do is change the import settings into the phone to customise their mobile broadband settings and a few other apps. Surely they have the money to pay enough qualified staff to turn it around quickly and stop a lot of customers becoming disgruntled!!! Sounds disorganised Posted by Les, UK
  • It seems that t-mobile have rolled out the update. Not sure when it was made available though but you can get it from http://support.t-mobile.co.uk/help-and-support/index?page=home&cat=SOFTWAREDOWNLOADS&tab=2 Posted by Dave, UK
