Opera has announced that version 5 of its Opera Mini mobile browser has been made available in beta. It's a fairly radical overhaul of the browser that sees the addition of tabbed browsing, speed dial and the Google search box from the main browser.

It also has a new UI design, the option of touchscreen or keypad browsing, a password manager and a new set of navigation buttons. It retains the data compression technology and zoom functionality of previous versions, too.

We ran into a few bugs in our brief testing - there doesn't seem to be a way to use predictive text, which is a pain in long web entry forms. The "find on page" functionality seemed a little cranky, too. Many would argue, though, that this is a substantial improvement to the mobile browser and should further increase its popularity on handheld devices.

If you'd like to download it, head to m.opera.com/next on your handset and follow the instructions. Opera warns that "phone support may vary while in beta", so don't expect everything to work off the bat. Oh, and don't forget to let us know what you think in the comments box below.

  • Speed Dial's not a new feature in Opera Mini 5, although all the blogs have been reporting that it is it would seem. All they've done is made it a little flashier, and in keeping with the desktop equivalent.

    What is worth mentioning is that the beta for Opera Mini 5 does not currently support Opera Link, which means you will be sans speed dial, search engines and bookmarks from your other installations for the time being.
