The Android developer team has announced the release of the Android 1.6 SDK, with the biggest news from the release support for GSM, CDMA and additional screen sizes.

This means the OS and Android apps will be able to be deployed on more devices than ever, potentially including lower-end handsets.

As well as differing screen sizes the software can be tailored to additional screen resolutions, like QVGA and WVGA, while there's also gesture APIs, a text-to-speech engine, and the ability to integrate with Quick Search Box.

The team says "you can expect to see devices running Android 1.6 as early as October", so we'll keep you posted. In the meantime, have a squint at the video above for an overview of the release.

  • Looks very promising, Android going from strength to strength. Interesting to see how developers go and manufacturers. Will HTC be producing phones with higher resolution screens now? I don't personally think we will see a huge amount more screen size, my Hero has more than enough as it is, though I would not say no to more. Posted by Tony Hedges, UK
