Facebook goes Labs with new "Prototypes" options

Facebook is taking a leaf out of Google's book, offering experimental features for the social networking site under the new "Prototypes" scheme.

Like Google's "Labs" options, popular in Gmail, the US company says: "Facebook Prototypes let us share the experimentation going on inside the walls of Facebook with the rest of the world".

Features that might not otherwise see the light of day for being "not quite ready for prime time", a bit esoteric or that "don't quite fit" will be available as opt-in options.

Examples include a "Recent Comments Filter", "Photo Tag Search", and "Enhanced Events Emails", all of which may make it onto the site proper, depending on popularity and feedback.

To access Prototypes, visit the Application Directory and filter by "Prototypes." From there, users should be able to activate or download any of the Prototypes listed.
