Clever folk at the Georgia Institute of Technology are presenting results of a recent project - "Augmenting Aerial Earth Maps with Dynamic Information".

With the title managing to make it sound quite dull - which is nothing compared to how snoozily the video portrays it - it's a really quite exciting development for the likes of Google Maps.

Using crowd-sourced video footage, the team has managed to create a "dynamic alive city" in augmented virtual earth type maps.

This could mean, for example, viewing a motorway from above would show moving traffic, pedestrians would appear walking on pathways and games of football in the local park would play out as you watched.

The video has more - including the how-to practicalities - and we'll keep you posted with developments.
