Beatles and iPod touch camera no show, what happened?. Audio, iPod, Apple, Beatles, iTunes, MP3 players, Rumours, iPhone 1

The clues were all there, but as always the Apple faithful wished for more than the company could deliver.

In the end the one-hour keynote presentation presented Apple fans with a faster iPod touch, a nano with digital camera and an update to the iTunes store.

There was no Beatles announcement, no iPod touch with camera, no iPod classic with camera and certainly no iTablet so how did the rumour mill fair?

iPod touch with camera

Reality?
No

Rumours from all walks of life with "sources" close to the product claiming Apple was going to launch an iPod touch with camera all fell flat. All those case manufacturers probably have stacks of samples now sitting around about to go to waste. Why did Apple not add a camera to the iPod touch when they have to the iPod nano is anyone's guess. It makes sense allowing video apps to be relevant to owners of the new MP3 player, and would certainly give company's like Flip a run for their money.

iPod nano with camera

Reality?
Yes

The cases and rumours said that Apple would launch an nano with camera and guess what, they were right. Apple's added video, but not still photography functionality to the pocket MP3 player. Well done rumour mill.

iPod classic with camera

Reality?
No

Well off the mark, all the Apple iPod classic got was a bump in hard drive space to 160GB giving you 40,000 songs on the go.

iPod classic to be discontinued

Reality?
No

Again well off the mark. It might not have got a camera, but did get that size increase, not a sign that they are ditching the MP3 player that started it all is about to get dropped from the line-up. It means that Apple TV is now one of the longest running products to be left out in the cold.

New iPod shuffle

Reality?
Kinda

While the miniature player didn't see an update, Apple did acknowledge that the lack of being able to plug in your own headphones is annoying. You'll now be able to get a cable that lets you connect your own 'phones to the player.

Beatles coming to iTunes

Reality?
No

We've said it all along, but this was never going to really happen. Apple used a Rolling Stones lyric on the invite and even EMI said it wasn't happening. So what was the story behind the Sky news story claiming Yoko Ono told them it was? Time will have to tell.

iTunes 9

Reality?
Yes

Rumours of an iTunes update where on the money. Whoever started them clearly knows someone on the inside. The software added a number of features including more genius support, social networking elements and Home Sharing. Those FT started Cocktail rumours with iTunes LP panned out nicely too, but those iTunes leaked screenshots that we called as fake, were way off the mark.

Apple TV

Reality?
No

Yep, video might be where it's "gonna be at" in a couple of years time, but that isn't now according to Apple's roadmap. Another event, another day without a mention. Apple TV must be sulking at the back of the class by now thinking that nobody likes it. Altogether now... Arhhhh.

Apple iTablet

Reality?
No

Tablet, what tablet? As you probably expected, not a mention or hint in sight.

The return of Jobs

Reality?
Yes

Not only did CEO Jobs manage to get a standing ovation from Apple employees and journalists at the San Francisco event, he confirmed the liver transplant he had earlier in the year, and encouraged others to sign up before commenting that he now has a liver of a "20-year old". Looking thin, but healthy the CEO promised plenty more exciting products in the future.

Cause for more rumours

Reality?
Yes

Jobs said it himself: "I'm getting to work with our incredibly talented teams to come up with some great new products for you all in the future."

What do you think he could mean? Let us know in the comments below.
