Palm Pixi webOS phone announced

Palm has introduced a second handset into its webOS range, currently led by the Palm Pre.

The Palm Pixi claims "all the power of Palm webOS - including multitasking activity cards, Palm Synergy, intuitive notifications, and universal search" but in a thinner, candybar form factor.

A 3G handset, the phone gets a 2.63-inch, 320x400 resolution touchscreen, Qualcomm’s MSM7627 chipset, Microsoft Exchange push email, built-in GPS, a 2-megapixel camera with flash, accelerometer, media player, Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR, 8GB memory, microUSB connector and a 3.5mm stereo jack.

Apparently Palm's skinniest ever phone, the Pixi is due on the Sprint network in time for Christmas.

With a full keyboard and rubberized back cover, Palm says the Pixi is "especially handy for extensive messaging and social networking", aiming the phone firmly at the consumer end of the market.

The smartphone maker will offer a "Palm Pixi Artist Series" with a selection of limited-edition back covers in a range of eye-catching designs.

As rumoured the original Pre has seen a price drop in the States - "you can now purchase a Palm Pre from Sprint for as low as $149.99 with contract" - this compares to $199.99 at launch.

The Palm Pre is due to launch in the UK on O2 by Christmas, a UK launch for the Pixi is as yet unconfirmed.
