Spotify has become the number one free app in the Apple iTunes store in less than 48 hours.

The audio streaming app that needs a premium subscription to make it work has clearly proved popular following a wave of publicity starting on Sunday to become the most favourite download of the week for the iPhone.

The app has out performed current favourites such as "Super Hard Puzzle" and "What's your IQ?" to take the number one spot.

Spotify has yet to confirm the full number of downloads however the app has garnered over 3000 customer reviews.

Spotify, first confirmed for the App store in August has only just became available to download in the UK.

Users who download the free app can stream music over the internet directly to their phone as well as sync playlists.
