Readius saved as Polymer Vision bought out

E-paper mobile phone will live to see another day

8 September 2009 11:38 GMT / By Amy-Mae Elliott

Although it's more of a report than an official release at this stage, it seems the Readius e-paper mobile phone's future is now assured.

Polymer Vision, the company behind the phone's futuristic design, was been closed down by its Dutch parent company for financial reasons, in July.

The Readius is a fully-functioning 3G mobile phone with a 13cm fold-out black and white display for reading documents, newspapers, books, etc.

However, it's now been revealed that Polymer Vision has been bought out by an unnamed Asian company, who will now restart the firm's development of foldable e-ink displays.

80% of the workforce are to be retained under the deal, but its unclear at this stage how many of the 50 people that worked at Polymer Vision's facilities in the Millbrook Technology Campus in Southampton will keep their jobs.
