Twitter makes you thicker, says scientist

Microblogging turns us into bird brains

7 September 2009 9:40 GMT / By Amy-Mae Elliott

A scientist has slammed Twitter, the microblogging service that's the social networking site du jour, for being bad for our brains.

Dr Tracy Alloway of Stirling University, and an expert in working memory, believes that retaining and using retained info is the "real foundation of learning" over IQ.

Alloway says: "Twitter can cause harm because it produces a stream of information every second with no opportunity to process or manipulate that information".

Facebook however gets the thumbs up as it requires us to use more memory as well as making us feel part of a social group, and therefore helps train our brains.

Dr Alloway will talk on this topic at the British Science Association festival taking place this week.
