Toshiba BDX2000 Blu-ray player launched

IFA 2009: "This product does not play HD DVD discs"

3 September 2009 17:10 GMT / By Ben Crompton

Amongst the many announcements at IFA 2009 is the release of Toshiba's first Blu-ray player, significant in that the company had previously only supported HD DVD, the standard that lost out to Blu-ray.

According to the company the BDX2000 "delivers high image quality and sophisticated design" whilst the launch "underscores Toshiba’s commitment to high definition entertainment".

The BDX2000 provides full HD 1080p, 24fps playback and supports BD Live (profile 2.0), allowing users to download additional content for a specific film.

The design consists of a "smoked mirrored front panel" with a front panel drop-down door which conceals the players primary functions apparently allowing for a smooth, clean finish.

Other features include 1080p upscaling an SD card slot and DivX/AVCHD playback.

No word on pricing but the player should be available in December and as ever we'll keep you posted.

  • Can someone tell me WHY none of the manufacturers can make a Blue Ray player that RECORDS, yet?

I realize that blank Blue Ray disks are rare (and expensive) right now, but Blue Ray players can read regular DVD+/- R disks as well. I'd like to be able to record my TV shows on regular DVD disks via a Blue Ray machine, and later when the disks are cheaper, use BR-disks instead - but that's REAL hard to do when none of the makers will put a player out that also records!!! And they wonder why sales aren't that brisk - duh!

  • Greg - check out the Panasonic DMR-BS850 Blu-ray recorder (and other models): http://www.pocket-lint.com/news/25109/panasonic-blu-ray-recorders-hit-shops

The problem here is price and specification - these models with a Freesat tuner cater for the UK market so the US requires a different solution. It will, however, record onto (and play) just about anything.
