Music videos make a return to YouTube

6-month UK block comes to an end

The block created by YouTube in March this year has finally come to an end, once more enabling thousands of music videos to be viewed by UK users.

The block started after the Google-owned company had a disagreement over licensing with the PRS, who collects royalties for songwriters and music publishers. However a deal has now been reached which should last until 2012 with payments now coming in the form of a lump sum as opposed to paying per song. The lump some does not appear to have been disclosed.

YouTube’s director of video partnerships, Patrick Walker, said: “We are extremely pleased to have reached an agreement with PRS for music and look forward to the return of premium music videos to YouTube in the UK”.

This should come as a relief to the music industry all round, especially artists, who have not been able to take advantage of the massive amounts of coverage that YouTube can deliver.
