Napster confirms no streaming music iPhone app

Not competing with Spotify and Rhapsody

Napster confirms no streaming music iPhone app

2 September 2009 14:54 GMT / By Duncan Geere

Napster has admitted that unlike its rivals, it has no plans for a streaming music service on the iPhone. A spokesperson for the company put the blame on " high licensing fees for streaming to a mobile phone".

Napster says that it wouldn't be able to competitively price a streaming music application and instead is working with the labels to try and lower how much it costs for companies to build such applications. Instead, Napster recommends users visit m.napster.com.

A Napster subscription in the UK gets you unlimited streaming and DRM-ed downloads for £15 a month. However, Apple bans third-party downloads to the iPhone, including MP3s, so that won't work very well. Perhaps if the Spotify and Rhapsody apps are successful in their respective markets, then Napster might change its tune.
