Service Battery: Snow Leopard encourages battery replacement

Warnings added to power bar

Service Battery: Snow Leopard encourages battery replacement. Software, Mac software, Operating Systems, Apple, Snow Leopard 0

MacBook and MacBook Pro users upgrading to Snow Leopard are being encouraged to replace flagging batteries via a new feature in the new OS.

"Mac OS X v10.6 Snow Leopard includes an improved Battery menu bar extra for portable Macs. The Battery menu bar extra provides information about the condition of the battery, as well the amount of time remaining on the current charge, the current active power source, and any current charge status details," Apple states on a support page.

Users with a unhealthy battery will, once upgraded, get a warning asking them to either "Service Battery", "Replace Soon", "Replace Now", or "Check Battery".

"If you see "Replace Soon" in the Battery menu, the battery may still be usable and hold some charge, however, you might consider battery replacement," suggest Apple perhaps hoping to secure extra funds from the cheap upgrade.

Currently MacBook and MacBook Pro batteries cost around £87 in the UK and $129 in the US suggesting a nice sideline revenue earner for the Cupertino based company.

However before you rush out to splash out on a new battery for your Apple laptop, we recommend seeing if a recalibration fixes the issue.

Apple's instructions for this are:

1. Plug in the MagSafe Power Adapter and fully charge the battery.

2. When the battery is fully charged, the light on the MagSafe Power Adapter connector changes to green and the Battery icon in the menu bar indicates that the battery is charged.

3. Allow the battery to rest in the fully charged state for two hours or longer.

4. You can use your computer during this time as long as the power adapter is plugged in.

5. With the computer still on, disconnect the power adapter and continue to use your computer.

6. When you see the low battery warning, save your work and close all applications. Keep your computer turned on until it goes to sleep.

7. After your computer goes to sleep, turn it off or allow it to sleep for five hours or longer.

8. Connect the power adapter and leave it connected until the battery is fully charged.

9. You can use your computer during this time.

  • You can achieve something similar on all Dells sans software. If you press the button underneath the chassis you can gauge battery charge, and by holding this same button you can also gauge battery wear.

For the former test, five lights is equivalent to a full charge and for the latter test, five lights is indicative of a battery in need of replacement.

If you have a Dell, try it and see for yourself!

  • I installed 10.6 saw the service battery in the battery status. The battery health was 55% on 94 cycles! I figured a calibration was needed as well. Did steps 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5. When the battery reached 68% of its charge, the battery health jumped back to 94%. Still need to finish the calibration and if this does not work, I am going to zap the PRAM to see if that helps. If i continue to have an issue I am brining it to a Apple Store. I am making sure I am logging it all on Coconut Battery. Posted by L. Bretton, USA
  • There seems to be something wrong with this feature: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=10134236 Posted by Marc Peeters, The Netherlands
  • What does "service battery" mean exactly? why isn't apple clear on what it is they want me to do? how do you service a battery other than throwing it out and buying a new one? Posted by alerutte, AUS
  • I noticed the "service battery" message after installing SL. I was getting about 2 hours of battery life. Now, a week later, I'm seeing the computer suddenly shut down without warning after only about an hour. Even after it shuts down if I press the button on the battery it shows four lights. Curious. I'll go to the Apple store and see what they say. This battery is about two years old. Posted by John, United States
  • !!!!!!! SOLVED !!!!!!!!!!
Hi everyone. I've solved this problem on my own.

    steps are:
__double__ calibrate your battery (fully charge and fully discharge).
2nd time I was charging my mbp it was shutted down and it was god damn long.

Then I turn it on (from hibernation) turn it off again, reseted pram (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379). And that's it. :)

    Hope it will help someone.

  • i need help with a problem with my mac. i bought a macbook about 3 months ago, so it is still in very good shape. but when i unplug the power adapter it immediately shuts down. This wasnt a gradual decrease in battery life either. It just started doing it randomly. I have the "replace now" message coming up and i have no idea what would cause this to happen.

    Can anyone help me out?
