Nokia has confirmed the truth in recent internet rumours by announcing the launch of the ARM-powered Nokia N900.

Running Maemo 5, an open source, Linus-based OS, the claim is that it delivers a "PC-like experience on a handset-sized device".

Nokia has previously used Maemo for its internet tablets, but it's an interesting move from the Finnish company to bring it to the handset market in its Nseries range.

Nokia says the N900 has "evolved" from its previous generation of internet tablets and will let users have "dozens" of application windows open and running simultaneously while using calling features, the touchscreen and QWERTY keyboard.

The Nokia N900 offers an ARM Cortex-A8 processor, up to 1GB of application memory and OpenGL ES 2.0 graphics acceleration.

The new device offers a "panoramic" 3.5-inch WVGA homescreen that can be fully personalised with favorite shortcuts, widgets and applications.

With a Mozilla-powered browser, the claim is that web pages look the way they would on a computer while online videos and interactive apps get full Adobe Flash 9.4 support.

The Nokia N900 has 32GB of storage, which is expandable up to 48GB via a microSD card and a 5-megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss optics. Other specs include HSDPA, Wi-Fi and A-GPS.

The Nokia N900 will be available in select markets from October 2009 with an estimated retail price of 500 euros before tax and subsidies.

Pocket-lint will bring you more on this new device from the Nokia World event in early September.

  • Looks awesome!!!! Posted by Micah Kilton,
  • Why does Nokia still cling to a physical keyboard almost in the same desperate way that a drowning man clings to flotsam? As you may be aware, I have/use an HTC Hero and even with the phone in portrait the onscreen keyboard is easy to use, flicked over into landscape and its a doddle to use. Nokia's insistance on a physical keyboard makes their phones thicker and less comfortable to carry about. What does it say about Nokia's own attempts at onscreen keyboards, are they saying "we don't think our attempts at onscreen keyboards are good enough to drop the physical keyboard.." (?)

This could be the last death-throws of a dieing company that lost their way sticking with symbian, experimented with maemo, when all along they should have been android... will be sad to see them go.

  • Excellent, just what I've been waiting for!

A mobile phone with a real OS, a good choice of apps which I can also run on my PC. Much better than the "mobile only" apps on android or iphone.

The hi-res screen and the keyboard are essential, no on screen keyboard is as good as a physical keyboard, particularly not for this kind of device.

  • Tony Hedges,

Writing the obituary of Nokia ? Dont get carried away with the iPhone, Android etc style over substance frenzy, Nokia still rules the roost and Symbian is pretty good and well proven, it runs on more smartphones than all the other OS'es put together. True its user interface is dated but a new and improved version (eyecandy too) is in the works and is bound to maintain stability, efficiency of existing version. No need to mourn for NOKIA, they will be around for a long long time.
