Another exploding iPhone reported in France

Apple products get EU scrutiny as several incidents now reported

26 August 2009 9:56 GMT / By Amy-Mae Elliott

Another instance of an exploding iPhone has been reported in France, following previous, similar incidents across France, Britain, Holland and Sweden.

The reports - that have allegedly seen various iPods and iPhones combusting in a manner of ways - have prompted an EU investigation via its product safety system asking for details of such events, which may lead to a wider investigation.

The latest report comes from Yassine Bouhadi, a 26-year-old security guard from Villevieille, near Nimes, who says: "I was texting my girlfriend like I do every day when the phone made a noise like 'schplok'. A little bit of screen hit me in the eye and I had to remove it with a tweezer".

Prior to this Romain Kolega, a French teenager, was injured when his girlfriend's iPhone "exploded into shards after beginning to 'crackle and pop like a deep-fryer'".

Other incidents encompass an iPod touch in Liverpool, an iPhone catching on fire in a car in Holland and a similar case with an iPod and a Saab motor in Sweden.

  • I think I believe this article as far as I can throw it.... which is apparently what happened to this iPhone judging from the picture. The actual claims doesn't seem to match the overall result.

Even the reporter doesn't quite believe it:

'Judging from the comments on the paper's site, readers are not convinced by this latest tale of iPhone combustion. For a start, the newspaper talks of the phone imploding and the picture looks as if something hit the screen. Bouhadi says he paid 600 euros for the phone -- the full price without a service subscription -- which also sounds a little unusual.'

  • ridiculous...no evidence of anything other than throwing the thing...who removes a shard of glass from their own eye with a tweezer? no medical records, no photographs, no signs of injury, not to mention the fact that batteries don't pack any explosive power, let alone enough to send a shard of the screen flying...this stinks of frivolity Posted by anon, interwebs
  • A Nokia has hurt my girlfriend's titties.. she usually carries the device in her ample bosom. Not so anymore -- the other day, for no apparent reason, her Nokia got steaming hot and hurt her skin. She has thrown out the device since.

  • I'd take all of this with a generous pinch of salt...

Firstly, Apple designs their products in California, most of which are actually manufactured in China. If anything, Chinese manufacturing should be in question as well as quality control. Can anyone remember how not so long ago melamine ended up in dog food made in China?

Secondly, I love and care for my iPhone, therefore I have it in a protective casing which includes a screen cover. If through my careless actions my iPhone ever blew up, the shards of glass would be contained anyway.

    Am I worried? Nah
